Hello Steve!
Mix the following:
Chopped onions (not too fine)
Tomato ketchup
Veg Oil
Salt
Lemon juice.
Chopped cilantro stems (optional)
I suspect most of them use red color additive and or paprika powder. Some may even be using tomato paste of the canned type.
Quite surprised how this one got into as a table condiment of Indian foods. Its certainly not an original.

Recipe provided by Funcook comes close to what the Indian restaurants serve here in US . But I still doubt whether they use Ketchup !! Also I believe they use vinegar , hope someone can help with the exact recipe Steve is looking for !

Onion chutney travelled well from UK. Yes, it is not from any Indian books as far as I have known Indian food.It was started by Bangladesh restaurants in london. I like FUNCOOKS recipe, I have tried it that way and it is pretty good, will make a good S/W too.
