Question on Poppodom Roasting

What is the best method for roasting these? I have a gas stove, so I toast poppodom directly over the flame. Despite my best efforts, I always seem to burn a tiny bit of my poppodom. They still taste good, but not quite as rich as the poppodom that I have had in restaurants.
thanks,
Tom

DEAR TOM
POPPODUM ROASTING
I AGREE THAT IF YOU DO THEM DIRECTLY OVER A GAS FIRE THEY WILL CHAR A LITTLE IN A SOME PLACES.
HOWEVER, ONE OF THE METHODS I USE IS AS FOLLOWS:
TAKE A FRYING PAN, AND GREASE IT WITH OIL. AS SOON AS IT IS HOT, PUT THE POPPODUM AND IT WILL START PUFFING UP.
TAKE A SPATULA AND PRESS ALL THE PARTS OF THE POPPODUM. I CANNOT REMEMBER IF YOU HAVE TO TURN THE POPPODUM OVER TO THE OTHER SIDE OR NOT, ANYWAY TRY.
AS SOON AS THE POPPODUM HAS BROWNISH SPOTS ALL OVER REMOVE IT QUICKLY.
IF YOU LIKE YOU CAN SHAPE IT QUICKLY INTO A SEMICIRCLE SHAPE OR A QUADRANT SHAPE BY FOLDING IT, BUT YOU HAVE TO DO IT QUICKLY OTHERWISE IT BECOMES DRY AND IMPOSSIBLE TO SHAPE.
GOOD LUCK

Dear Tom
appalam in restaurants are mostly deep fried in oil and thus the good taste .Heat oil and as soon as it is hot enough for frying drop the appalam and turn it with spoon to cok either side.
If you want to do it in microwave you can followYummy's recipe with a small change just coat the appalam with oil on either side.this will enhance the taste.

If you have urad appalam, you can toast them in toaster oven without oil. Put one appalam at a time and put the toaster setting to broil. You have to stand next to it and flip it once the bubbles start forming. If you buy flavored appalams (with masala or jeera or black pepper), it makes a great low calorie snack.
Also be careful when you remove the appalam from the toaster oven. Since the toaster is too small, if you are careless, you can get burns from touching the hot surface.

I make papads in the toaster oven too. definitely more healthy than fryng in oil.. and faster too. tastes better than cooking it in the microwave... it gives a smoky flavor to the papad.
