I love coconut (thengaai) chutney and other dishes made out of coconut. I live in US and I don't get coconuts here as in India - tried in various places - Kroger, Wal Mart, HEB, Indian shops - they are not good - either the cocunuts have got rotten inside or it doesn't taste good.
I wonder are there are good buying tips for coconut, do we get coconuts here in US with the taste we get in India?

Hello Senthil,
When you buy coconut,
First look at the underside.
There will be three dark eyes.If they are black, don't buy the coconut. (Not atleast in USA) as I have experienced myself that such coconuts are spoilet.
Second thing you need to check is that the coconut as sold in USA, if it has any dark patch on the out side, invariably it is attacked by fungus.
So do not buy such coconuts.
Yes, buying coconut from Chinese joint /Chinese market is best.
Try and buy brown coconut and not very light coloured ones.
Tell me if you found my tips working.
(I can say with confidence because where I was working in USA, we used to have hundreds of coconuts offered per week.
