I will post a wonderful poem i read somewhere on the net:
Mother, please forgive
my feeble understanding
of your grace.
Your divine fire
scorches putrid sores,
sears age old
crusts of disillusion.
My mind recoils,
quivers
like a wild beast
caught
in an iron trap.
Oh, my dear Mother,
how easy it is to forget
my urgent prayers
requesting you to remove
all impediments
blinding me to your love.
Oh, yes,
I welcome suffering
at the onset, Mother,
and then
your light
shines on
some rotting treasure
I've clung onto
for centuries,
one of the thousands
that had seemed to give me
golden wings
for flying free.
Like a small child
refusing to let go
of its soft and furry
but stiff,
dead kitten,
I weep,
pleading for you
to restore my illusion.
Over and over again
I call
your name.
After the coals of your skillful devastation
die down,
you float in,
filling charred, empty spaces,
with the fragrance
of lilacs,
the sweetness of your unfathomable love.

Ms.Lakshmi,
That the attitude prevalent even with us. When we were children, we will start sporting the sacred ash on our forehead and visit the Temple nearby at the time of exams.
The same attitude prevails during the life time also. Even with me, the practical following increases only when i am at loggerheads with myself, otherwise spiritualism stays at an intellectual level only.
We need to grow from this level.Sorry, i don't know about you, i am talking about most persons including me.

When materialism paves way for gradual spiritualism, the humam mind is at loggerheads with mutiple thoughts, a case of sustained dilemma.to take the path or not is the ultimate quest. The quest continues and so does life...

KT,
"Like a small child
refusing to let go
of its soft and furry
but stiff,
dead kitten,"
--i love these lines...it just depicts our fultile efforts to clings on to things that really doesnt belong to us...
'otherwise spiritualism stays at an intellectual level'
---i remember reading somewhere that "Spiritualism is a mass of confusion, a body without parts and passion, principle or power'.....maybe thats why even at times of hardship and adversity many of us find it difficult to accept spiritualism as an answer....
loggerheads??...what on earth is that??

Actually the poem "Mauna Guru" was written on the lines of its English counterpart, that I wrote around the same time..The Silent Guru appeared in Poetry.com- You can check it under ILP name Iyer Raji.
The Silent Guru (Dakshinamurthi
Sivan)
Mondays I make my offering
Of raisins, honey and milk;
With every hope of aspiring-
To be amidst your ilk.
From you I've learnt so much my friend
My silent teacher true;
Language difficult to comprehend
Will now steadily accrue.
Culture, religion, music -galore
Humour, literature and so much more!
Asynchronous learning, virtually fun-
On cyber time frame naturally done!
Disciplined, prompt, kind and free,
No strings attached in this learning spree;
How can I say thank you enough?
Amidst complexities rough and tough?
While yonder "Dakshin" I see you there,
Benevolently smiling, and quite unaware-
That resides here many an ignorant soul,
Fascinated by your energy & formless role!

English original is more beautiful. Especially this line:
//With every hope of aspiring-
To be amidst your ilk.//
I am reminded of a line from some Tamil Saint(is it vallalar or Thayumanavar?):
Naadagathal unnadiyar pol nadiththu
//Naan naduvey Veedagathey pugunthidavey miga perithum vizhaikindren//
See the humbleness of the Saint and the beauty of his devotion. He classifies himself as a person who merely acts as if he is a spiritual aspirant and tries to enter into the Kingdom of God( sorry for using this word, the 'Veedagam' or liberation can be best explained by using the 'misunderstood' word, Kingdom of God).
I will be happy if someone gives the full poem.

My love for you
has driven me insane
I wander aimlessly
the ruins of my life
my old self a stranger to me
Because of your love
I have broken with my past
My longings for you
keeps me
in this moment
My passion
gives me courage
I look for you
in my innermost being
I used to read
the myths of love
Now I have become
the mythical lover ~Rumi~

"Reaching this land,
The ignorant grow wise,
The wise fall speechless with silence,
The worshiper becomes utterly drunk.
Made perfect in wisdom and detachment,
One breathes in with love, and with love breathes out."
