Dear Music Lovers.
When the discussion about the film comes I always feel that any movie is remembered because of its songs only. It is recognized by its music only. The film music is the heart of the any film.
So much has been talked about the star of the millennium, actress of the millennium, film of the millennium and so on. But so far not a single magazine has written about the Music Directors of the Millennium I mean to say it is Laxmikant-Pyarelal who have dominated the film music since 1963 (Parasmani) down to 1998(Diwana Mastana).
The duo has given some remarkable music in past and had maintained the consistency for about 37 years which itself is great feat. Since 1963 till the TV era started the Laxmikant –Pyarelal was the house hold name. Laxmikant – Pyarelal has won as many as seven filmfare awards but they could have won even more than that. The films like Sati Savitri, Sant Gyaneshwar,Aaye Din Baharake, Farz, Khilona, , Intquam, Shor, Bobby, Ek Duje Ke Liye, Ishwar, Utsav, Tejab, Sursangam, Khalnayak etc deserve to win the best music award, which they narrowly missed, for the respective years.
The duo has given all type of variety of music whether it classical, folk, westernized or disco. Most of the songs composed by them were catchy, melodious and was liked by all classes. The songs composed by Laxmikant –Pyarelal were used to become most popular in most of the villages of India. Till today most of the old tunes of the duo are so popular that they are being rendered in marriages and functions by changing words.
Laxmikant-Pyarelal has dominated the most popular radio programme “ Binaca Geet Mala”, in sixties, seventies and eighties, weekly count down programme broadcast by radio Shree Lanka.
Moreover the Laxmikant –Pyarelal had worked with all the topmost Producers and directors of their time. Just for instance V. Shantaram (Jal Bin Machhali…) Raaj Kapoor( Bobby, SSS and Premrog), Manoj Kumar(Shor and many more), Yash Chopra(Daag), B. R. Chopra(Dastaan), Raj Khosla(Anita, MGMD, Do Raste and many more), Man Mohan Desai(Amar Akabar Anthony and many more), K. Vishwanath( Sargam, Sursangam and many more),Hrishikesh Mukharjee(Satyakam), Prasad Productions(Milan, Khilona, Jeene Ki Raah and many more) Rajashree Productions ( Dosti, Taqdeer, Uphar and Piya Ka Ghar). Ramanand Sagar (Charas and more), Subhash Ghai( Karz, Hero and many more), Shekhar Kapoor (Mr India),David Dhavan(Diwana Mastana). Just to add few more J. Omprakash, Mohan Kumar, Shakti Samanta, Satyen Bose, Dalal Guha, Raja Nawathe, Shreedhar, Raghoonath Zalani, Babubhai Mistry, Vijay Bhatt, Mahesh Bhatt, Rahul Rawail, Brij, Vijay Anand, Darasingh, Raajkumar Kohli, Raajkumar Santoshi, Nitin Mohan, Mehul Kumar, Raj Kanwar Satish Kaushik etc…The list includes the great Producers and Directors of yesterdays and toady’s. The songs of their respective films were super duper hit and are still popular even though some of them are more than 30 years old.
It is not easy to maintain the consistency in this field. But Laxmikant-Pyarelal were able to do it so, for more than 37 years since their emergence with the super hit music of Parasmani in 1963. No any other music director is able to do so. Laxmikant-Pyarelal had maintained the popularity of their music in the era of all time great Music directors like Shankar Jaikishan, Kalyanji-Anandji, Madan Mohan, Jaidev, Khaiyyam, S. D. Burman, Ravi, Salil Chaudhari, O. P. Nayyar, R. D. Burman, Ravindra Jain, Bhappi Lahiri, Rajesh Roshan, Anand Milind, Nadeem Shravan, Annu Malik, Jatin Lalit, A. R. Rehaman and so on till the death of Laxmikant in 1998. And that is why they are the Music Directors of the millennium.

Very rightly said best is always best and L-P was and is best they are the music directors of the millenium because of there long lasting domination in hindi film music. plus they have conqeured all there competetors all through the years wheather its shanker jaikishen or S D burman , R D burman or kalyanji anand ji , rajesh roshan or bappi lahri , nadeem sharvan to A R rehman L P remained on top as far as music is concerened. in R D burman affected shankar jaikishen's reign but L-P remained on top when bappi lehri came it affected R D burman, but L-P again stood ahead with there variety of music and there ability to change with latest trends always kept them on the top then bappi lehri faced a downfall by the entrance of nadeem sharvan but L-P again kept going with chartbusters like narsimha chaalbaaj hum saudagar khuda gawah and khalnayak then came A R rehman who totally chnged the style of hindi music and luck did'nt support L-P but they did there job to compete A R rehmaan by givig superb music of Raajkumar and bhairvi but the music was wasted as the movies prooved failure at the box office and then laxmikant dead leaving pyarelal alone otherwise this pair has been again dominating in the industry there is surely no doubt listen to the music of raajkumar and u will know there capability

Laxmikant-Pyraelal cannot be called music directors of the millenium not even any decade. LKP's music lacks depth and definition. They were not innovators like naushad, salil Da, Pancham or shankar Jaikishen. These musicians were ahead of their times and introduced something new to the hindi film music.
Not saying that LKP were not major players in the industry, just that LKP made music in quantity, quality was missing except for a few films. Their biggest score Bobby had input from shankar Jaikishen. A little known fact.

My response above is bordering on the critical side. So I would like to clarify. Yes, I do think that LP gave very good music in a lot of films. They had longetivity, their music was well liked and they had a broad appeal and a huge following.

With due respects to Mr. Ajay, i feel it is truly preposterous to call L-P as the MDs of the millennium. Far from being so, I consider them to be among the worst of the top rankers. They were the ones who along with Bappi Lahiri brought wholesale ruin of film music in the 1980s. Note how as L-P's monopoly increased in th 80s, the quality of music correspondingly deteriorated during this decade. Fortunately, we had younger blood like Anand Milind, Nadeen Shravan etc. who came in like a breath of fresh air and brought back some semblance of quality in film songs in the 1990s. I take strong exception to Shri Ajay's opinion, for I believe one can have preferences but to thrust them upon genuine lovers of music is unacceptable. The only contenders to the honour are Shanker Jaikishen and RD Burman, who in the real sense were geniuses and absolute masters at their craft.
To L-P goes the singular credit of having befooled gullible music lovers for almost three decades with the mediocrity of their scores.

It seems that some people here have not been exposed to the awsome variety LP have in their repetoire. There has been no composing entity like LP ever before and there will certainly be no one like them ever again. There are many aspects of LP's music to prove they are one of the best and like it or not, they are certainly up there with the likes of SJ, SDB, MM, RDB etc. This will probably open up some flames so away we go !!!. Let's keep the discussion healthy !!

How many people out here who are critisizing LP really know why directors made a beeline for signing them in, if their Music was really that bad?
I'll put this in a simple way. If something is bad, will people stand and place the same in the "No 1" position for 35 years? Does fluke and trick work that long ??
How many here really know how strongly LP used to painstakingly create, compose and conduct music barely depending on their assistants, contrary to how Kalyanji Anandji occasionally leaned on Babla and Pancham's Basu-Manohari sound as good as Pancham himself in "Subse Bada Rupaiya".
How many out here have heard film music completely beyond just songs, including background scores? Well if you haven't, I suggest start off with Agnipath and Kuuda Gawah, and concentrate only on the music, not just during the songs. It is nothing short of celestal symphony, which a has classic extensions blending it to Indian music. No wonder why actors Amitabh Bachhan always wanted an LP music in the backdrop while their potent dialogue delivery was in progress. NO OTHER music director dead or alive, probably other than Salil Chowdhary could match upto the accomplishments of this fabled duo.
