Padmarajan, Bharathan - two of the best directors ever produced in India who created films that were accepted by all classes of people.
I would say that Padmarajan/s films had the best natural flow of story. Even small minute details were considered with great respect as we can see in all his films. His best "Namukku Parkaan MT) was really flowing.
Bharathan - a genius. Anyone who has seen Vaishaali- a product of Bharathan and MT- willrealize his talents.
Both were greate screen writers too. Their combination -Ozhivukalam - writtenby Padman sir and directed by Bharathan was excelling.
Post your opimions on the Duo.

Raghu,
rgdin the mileu and characters there r bound 2 b differences. bcos, bein 2 individuals their preception and perspective must b different.
but, i wud like 2 further analyze ur statement on their character attributes.
MT takes all his characters 2 a level where they face rejection from ppl who they care abt, that seems 2 b the drivin point of his theme, kathaye munnoottu kondu pokunnathu kathapathrangalude bhava parinithikalekkalere avarude sahacharyangalaanu... (eg. veeragatha, nakhakshathangal, mithya)
but, 4 padmarajan sandigdhaghattathe eethu reethiyil athijeevikkanamennulla arivullavaraanu. they carry the individual's dignity 'n personality thru out.. jeevithathodulla avarude pratirodhavum, chuttupadukalodulla avarude sameepanavum aanu kathayude gathi vigathikale nishchayikkunnathu.
(eg. gandharvan, innale, munthirithoppukal etc)
When itz time 2 resist MT's characters meekly submit 2 their fate. but, Padmarajan's character's just accept the fate as itz and then carries on. they never submit 2 it....
what do u say???

Does anyone have a complete list of the works of Bharathan? I saw a similar list for Padmarajan in previous postings. It would be nice if someone posted this as well.
I also think we need to discuss some more movies of Bharathan than has been done yet. (Most of the discussion centred on the works of Padmarajan).
(Probably because it is easier to be articulate about the skills of Padmarajan. Bharathan's talents seem more in the realm beyond words.)
How about a discussion on the joint works of Bharathan and Padmarajan, to start with? I know of
Lorry, Thakara, Prayaanam, Ozhivukaalam and Rathinirvedham as being of this type. Don't know the plots though... Probably there are other movies too...

It seems it is not so easy to get a list of the films that Bharathan directed. I have put up a list below, from rather dubious sources. I think I am sure that all these are Bharathan films. On the other hand, there may be some other films too which I have missed. Could somebody please confirm?
In pursuance of my earlier posting, it seems there are six films from the joint efforts of Padmarajan and Bharathan. I had missed Eenam.
Did Bharathan write the script for any of his movies? I know that he was the music director for Keli. I have the feeling that the script for 'nurunguvettam' was by Bharathan, but I am not sure...

Bharathan, while trying to make more films wasted his charisma.padmarajan was careful in that.He made just 18 against 40 by Bharathan. Bharathan could avoid his last 3 films.devaragam was like a drama,manjeersdhani-no comments.with churam he was trying to make a film from nothing.no story(another film with no story is "malootty")...no good actors (except nedumudi).may be he was trying to say a story how nature is related with mankind.i dont think thats reached to the audience.if you check padmarajan's films you cant find such 'waste' movies.even 'season' was watchable because of its style of tight narration and thriller nature.
I would say "thaazhvaaram" is the best from bharathan.story of revenge directed well with a great actor as the hero and portrayed in a great location.(it was attappadi).that location itself is a main character in that story.I think Bharathan was more into such details than into story.(there are exceptions like "nurunguvettam" and "kaattathe kilikkodu")Thats the main difference between bharathan and padmarajan.
Another difference is padmarajan's films are different from each other while bharathan liked to repeat the subjects. For example "rathinirvedam","thakara","parankimala" all deal with the sexual curiosity of teenagers.
Bharathan's selection of stories were also strange. He picturised two thallippoli novels of kakkanadan-adiyaravu (filmed as "parvathi") and parankimala. From the same author who wrote good novels like ushnamekhala.

Keli, kathodu kathoram(along with ouseppachan) music also was done by him..
He did the title credits and/or poster/publicity design for many of his films including amaram, vaishali etc...He was basically a painter, sculptor and an art director and had extremely good knowledge of classical music..He used to specify the raga in which he want a song...
