Dark Comedy in Indian Films

Someone someday will make the Great Indian Comedy. Surprisingly, there are very few out there. We Indians are
correctly alleged to be bad at humour. There's much attempt at humour in Indian cinema but all secondary to the
theme. There are enough farces akin to A Fish called Wanda and My Cousin Vinny. However, there's little
"black humour": the kind that can measure up to Dr Strangelove or Pulp Fiction. That's not asking for much, is
it?

Surely that's not true, you say? Again and again, you will remember great scenes and great performances from
"wholesome" phillums. Very few films are outright comedies, dedicated to good-quality original humour.

A friend and I have been thinking about this
paucity of dark humour in Indian films and
decided to start a webpage. If you wish to
take a look, it is at
http://www.stanford.edu/~manish/incomsearch.html

We
were pleasantly surprised to find a thread
in the forum addressing this issue with a
focus on Tamil films, so decided to try starting
this one.

Thanks,
Manish.
