I would like to put Aniyan bava chettan bava as fifth spot in 1995 .
Kathalan - Tamil (1994), Indian - Tamil (1996) and Titanic - English (1998) were sensational hits in Kerala during their respective years. These movies did better than most of the malyalam movies at that time.

amaram vittu poyi pinne baakki i dont think it will come in top five in respective years definitely they were super hits but during those years (86 to 91 ) each year produced almost 15 to 20 hits unlike now.

sudheer,
u may b correct!
does that applies 2 adharam(1992?), and ekalavyan(1995?) as well?
is kalapani a megahit in terms of profit? i heard it cud hardly recover itz enormous budget.

EO kalapani definitely comes within 1 to 5 of the movies in 1996. When I say kalapani i just considered the movies in 1996 when u consider the history of malayalam movies it wont count it is just an average hit.. Sorry i forgot Adharam it was a bigger hit than Thalasthanam and would be there in the fifth spot in 1992. Ekalavyan was released in 1993 it was a super hit but i think the five movies i listed in 1993 did better than ekalavyan which comes sixth but the next year 1994 was very pathetic that was why a movie like "malappuram haji" was placed in fifth spot which didnt do well as "Ekalavyan."

yeah, kalapani is in best 5. bcos, the other average grossers of the year were desadanam, azhagiya ravanan, dilliwala rajakumaran and kalyana sougandhikam.
by the same yardsticks, minnaram or sainyam might have done better business than MHaji,MJoji.

In 1996,Desadanam is definitely among the top 5.Kalapani is not.
1)Hitler
2)Ee puzhayum kadannu
3)Sallapam
4)Desadanam
5)Thoovalkottaram
Kalapani was a big failure in B&C centers.
1997,Aaram thampuran is definitely the biggest hit,not Aniyathipravu

then u put Anayithipravu at 2. Why i put it one was it was a slow picker and big A class hit as first week people thought it would be a flop with new comers and that time it was a record that a movie completed 75 regular shows at all A centres (Releasing centers) it was released. B class , C class it was super hit and mega hit in A class.
Aram Thamburan was also a huge hit true even in vlillages. but it was replaced after 50th day in some A centers i remember may be one or two. but in some " ola theatres " in palakkad ,trichur districts thamburan crossed 50 days.
Whatever the fact we are now missing big hits like Aniyathipravu, Aram thamburan etc which came in a single year both stories were entirely different and came in malayalam!!!

Ram, sallapam is number two in 1996 sure. bcoz ee puzhayam kadannu became noon show at 42nd day in Ernakulam but completed 100 days as noon show it completed regular 100 days in both Trivandrum and Calicut. But Sallapam crossed regular 135 days in both ernakulam and Calicut. I personally like ee puzhayum better than Sallapam.

I thought aaram thamburan became a hit after the 50 days.

1996 was a good year for Malayalam movie industry .There was a welcome change.Simple movies with good music and story became huge hits.Desadanam ,made for 30 Lakhs and collected more than 2.5 crores was the best example.Good movies like Sallapam,Thooval kottaram,Kanakinavu,Ee puzhayam became huge hits whereas superstar movies -Prince,Indraprastam,Yuvathuraki etc. couldnt make any impact at the box office.

kanakkinavu was not a huge hit . it was hit in malabar flop else where

1997 was a better year in terms of hits most of the movies minted money like Anayathipravu, Thamburan, Kutticthan 3d , Chandralekha , Lelam, Kadhanayagan, kaliyoonjal, kalyana pittennu, Janathipathyam, Mannadiyar penninu chenkotta chekkan. of which Anayithipravu and Aram Thamburan became all time hits.
Anayathipravu crossed 100 days at 17 centers of which 13 regular shows and 4 noon shows whic is still a record!!!. In Kasargod Nartaki theatre movie ran 100 days (noon show AFTER 75 days) first in the history of kasargod town.and in mavelikkara, Vadakara, Tellicherry etc movie crossed 100 regular shows apart from towns like TVM, EKM, calicut, Trichur, Kottayam, kollam , Alleppey, Palakkad etc. It was a big hit which revived the industry . Movie was released on March 26th 1997.
Then on Dec 25th 1997 came Aram Thamburan another all time hit which was not as big A class hit as Pravu. It also crossed 100 days at 12 releasing centers with 8 regular shows!! but in villages B and C definitely number one. This movie ran and ran for more than 65 days in vadakkancherry, shornur, Nilambur, Haripad etc small small towns and completed 225 days at TVM - sreekumar, sreevisakh .. so two big big hits and handful of super hits in one year that was 1997.!!!!!

I think, from 2000 onwards,Malayalam movie industry start going directionless. In 1998,we had some huge hits-Punjabi house,Summer in Bathleham,Harikrishnans etc.In 1999 also we had many above average movies at the box office.(Niram,Friends,Pathram etc.).In 2000,Narasimham became a big hit but almost all other movies followed that became flop.2000 end,we start seeing the crap comedy movies like Thenkasipattanam, which became a hit. Most of the movies after 2000 which became hit are either overaction OR crap comedy.

true Ram i was abt give the same posting as u did . when the year 2000 began we started with a greatest flop on New years day "Millenium stars" , which was released on Jan 1st 2000 it was big big flop and a crap movie. this was bad omen for the industry and what we achieved in the years 97 , 98 and 99 was lost and crap trends such as shakeela and komaaly wave started in 2000 After kinaarathumbikal and Thenkaasipattanam.
I missed Varnapakkittu in 97 which was also a hit

1999 was more or less similar to 97 not as good as 97 bcoz no mega hits but lot of hits like Friends, Niram, Veendum chila veettu karyangal, Pathram, usthaadh, Thachiledathu chundan, Vaasanthiyum lakshmiyum .., Kannezhuthi pottum thottu, Aakashaganga, Independence , The Godman, English medium etc.. All these movies were termed hits that means 12 hits !! and some average hits also of these 12 first two Friends and Niram turned out to be super hits.
Friends released during vishu ran for 125 days and completed 100 days at 9 centers with seven centers as regular shows. and two centers as noon shows it also created records in some centers like thiruvalla.
Where as Niram released in Sep 16th completed 100 days in 10 centers with four centers (Trivandrum , Ernakulam, Calicut and Kollam) had regular shows and six centers(Kottayam, Allepey, mavelikkara etc) it was noon shows.
Both these movies couldnt be as big as Aniyathipravu and Aram Thamburan but more or less the success was similar to we had two years back in 1997.
In 2000 situation changed we had two mighty hits Narasimham and Thenkaasipattanam but lots of flops and emergence of porn wave . Though these movies collected more money it ran 100 days at 5-6 A centers only but in C centers they were big hits. Narasimham had a record collection from Trivandrum.

After Thenkaasipattanam only one all time hit in malayalam that was Meesha madhavan which was released on July 4th 2002 which means after 2000 just one mega hit!!!!!!

The only herione who had some real star value was Manju warrier. All the new heriones doesnt have any star value.2001 and 2002 were good for Dileep.Eventhough quality of the movies were not good, most of them made profits. But in 2003,he lost lot of his popularity.I think, except Meesha,Kunhikoonan,Istam and Joker all his movies were below average in terms of quality.
