Hariharan and MT

Whenever this duo came up together Malayalam got excellent movies. Their creations were appreciated by the mass at the same time they had aesthetic values also.(so called ‘kalaamoolyavum janapreethiyum ulla chithram) .’kaambulla kathakal’ aanu MT-yude scripts. Hariharan was able to convert them flawless into the screen.

Panjagni : Oru sthree paksha cinema with a strong story line .geetha’s and ravi bombay’s first film in Malayalam.
Nakhakshathangal : a complicated teen age love story but narrated in an easy way.monisha got national award.good performances from other new faces vineeth and salma . jayachandran in a cameo role which I liked very much.

Aranyakam: Cant remember much.salma was there.what happened to this good actress?
amrutam gamaya : One of the most haunting films in Malayalam.Lal’s great performance.
oru vadakkan veera gadha : MT has a hobby reading between lines in classics.here is another example.Hariharan showed his talents in directing this periodical film. Mammootty made chanthu another memorable character in Malayalam.

Parinayam : Another periodical film which handled social issue. Because of movie’s slow pace and Mohini it dint reach the audience well.
ennu swantham janakikutti : Oru sthree paksha cinema koodi.pakshe mattoru angle-il ninnu…but the original short story is much better which mixed reality with fantasy well.screen play was written with adjustments for the box office.

rajesh,
yeah good topic.hariharan and iv sasi r for me, probably the most important directors in malayalam cinema after padmarajan and bharathan in the last 25 yrs or so.
the fact that their association has thinned down in the last few years is reflected in the films that r being made today...the benchmark....that has gone down i believe...

Hari,
MT adopted a different style while writing scripts for IV Sasi.Their films are mostly incident driven not feelings driven.Their films are more theme oriented .
Adiyozhukkukal,anubadham,aalkoottathil thaniye….vere aethokke undu avarude films?
Another notable difference is Hariharan decorated MT scripts with good songs.(really really good songs) while Sasi wanted them in a ‘rough’ manner.
As a matter of fact Shaji kailas is a customised version of IV Sasi. I am talking abt his films with Ranji Panicker.

any incident is always driven by feelings. but with incident the thing is u r driving a certain emotion thru a majority point of view.all mts scripts for sasi had a subject looked upon from a majority point of view while with hariharan mt catered to the minority section.also shaji a customised version of iv sasi???dont think so..u have to just watch devasuram and compare it with any of shaji's film in the same domain to obseve the difference.

Oh no.I was trying to mention the political/social films of IV Sasi-T Damodaran team.definitely shaji kailas –renji panicker team got inspiration from the formers. Shaji might have seen Vaartha,aavanazhi kind of films before making thalasthanam or commissioner. But the difference is renji panicker added more ‘realistic flavour’ in the screen play compared with T damodaran.for example you can relate krishakumar with ravi vallathol in commissioner or TM Jacob with kollam thulasi in King. Such ‘direct resemblances’ were not there in IV sasi films.I used the word customisation in this context.(btw aavanazhi had traces of rajan case).

Now coming back to devasuram .aaram thampuran is just a ‘rolled gold’ of devasuram. Things became worse with narasimham. These films don’t have the class of devasuram .no doubt in that. In devasuram lal was the villain in the first half.His evi deeds backfired on him and he realised the virtue of goodness of the world.fair enough….but look at aaraam thampuran.jaganathan kallu kudikkum,pennu pidikkum,smart aaya unnimaya-ye tholppikkum,adi koodum but at the same time he is good at heart,he sings,he follows the rituals…blah blah…so we can’t laugh at farah khan to send army officer shah rukh khan to college undercover (main hoon na). The funny thing is both these films are written by the same person.

idavazhiyile poocha mindaa poocha was their first film..
VeLLam also had teh script written by MT
