Is it just me or did no one here know that Lagaan was nominated in the "Best Foreign film" category at the Oscars.
I can't wait to see the look on Aamir Khan's face at the ceremony on March 24th.
Later

It is glad to see one Indian film is nominated for Oscar. But we shall not judge our movies by their eyes. lagaan was not the best movie ever made in India or it is not even the best of last year.
DCH and Chandni Bar were better than lagaan.Lagaan clicked due to the well utilisation of Cricket craze of Indians. Good acting and very good music added to it made a good movie.
Let us feel happy to see that our movies being appreciated in the world of Hollywood but keep our right to judge good movies for us.
Do you know the Great Charley Chaplin was not awarded an Oscar in his life time. Is it shameful to Oscar or Chaplin?

Hey if there is anyone who likes to SING or would like to check out other singers, I have a website with audio clips of amateur singers. Check out the site, and if you also want to send me an audio clip of your own singing/music, then I will showcase it on my site as well!
Thanks. The URL is http://www.angelfire.com/music4/sangeet

Lagaan was one of the better movies because of it's content, not because cricket appeals to Indians. Cricket films have a bad history in India anyways.
It showed how the human spirit could achieve anything even under pretty bad conditions. It was reminiscent of older movies by Guru Dutt like Pyaasa. It had no bloody violence or other mature themes.
While other movies just appeal to Indian people only, this movie was well appreciated by the international audience, especially Americans who pretty much hate cricket.
Even people who are against cricket are catching a showing.
If you think with a western perspective it is one of the better movies that came to bollywood in say the past 50 years.

Bosnia's No Man's Land might be a better movie. I don't know. But what I think is whatever the competitor might be 'Lagaan' would have always lost.
Things that goes wrong for Lagaan:
1. Length of movie: American hates lengthy movies and if they do like some like Ben Hur then it is in their own language. I can't imagine any American have the patience to see a 4 hour long subtitled movie from a third world country. In fact I myself won't like to see a 4 hour subtitled movie on a culture, game and country I have no clue about.
2. Contemporary topic: Bosnia is a contemporary topic about which Americans know and have been involved in. Americans don't care about anything to which they are not related to or can't relate to.
3. Who gives a damn about Indian struggle of Freedom? Remember the criticism 'Gandhi' faced in winning the Best Picture in 1984. 'Gandhi' is even mocked today.
When we start seeing Lagaan our mind is already set in the page of our history books which teaches us about the tyranny of British Rule. Amir Khan did not have to validate the villainy of British to us. From the first minute British are villains and we don't have a problem understanding the spirit of Lagaan Vilage people. and what they are fighting for.
To many Americans and British who read a different history book than us , British rule was beneficial to India and they actually civilized Indians and prospered this country and that Indians should be grateful.
How do you expect the spirit of Lagaan will get into those skulls? They might have thought 'what's the big deal? This movie is nothing better than 'Mystery Alaska' or 'Remembering the Titans' or the recent 'Replacement'. ' The spirit of Lagaan gets into you only if you can understand what Brtish rule was.
Like the British press wrote in their critic column about Lagaan," Not our cuppa tea". Off course it is not their cup of tea, the movie is against those b-astards. You can't expect to win an award for that.
4. I am guessing a political reason always plays in the Oscar. This is a big news in Bosnia. Sending a subtle sympathetic message to common Bosnians using just an award might be a very fine political finesse. Remember Pakistan losing to Bangladesh in World Cup cricket.
This one is a long shot. I am sorry if you didnot like this theory.
