fellowsurfers,
don't u also think malayalam cinema is becoming unflexible nowadays...what i mean is, we don't have enough different genres in malayalam, like in english, which surely wouldn't be bad. i don't mean that we should copy from hollywood or something like that...but i think there is nothing wrong in it to adapt some good ideas from abroad...not copy...just get inspirations from there...
see...in malayalam we have 1) comedy 2) action 3) comedy com tragedy, and now thank god also 4) horror. but what about the so called different genres? like pure gangster movies, roadmovie, city movies, experimental movies (like 'memento'...u know this one? in this movie the story is being told backwards...that means u see the end at the beginning, and then scene by scene the story is unfold to the spectator), or pulp fiction type of movies...for the youth specially...
i mean aren't these same style movies in malayalam getting really boring? jayaram making those same-type films always, then mohanlal with his large than life characters, dileep is a fresh wind, but he is actually only the next jayaram, and kunjacko boban is running around in silly college films. (i mean, okay, the youth surely needs these college movies...but that should be only a part of the whole thing). in my opinion mammooty is the only actor trying to do different films....like this 'ambedkar' and 'dani' now...many should follow him...
u know i dream about a day when kunjacko boban and vineeth run around in black suits, with a beretta in their pocket and talk about malayalam cinema getting boring, while going to kill gangster boss thilakan....yeah, that would be a damn cool movie...
new actors should also be introduced to malayalam cinema...actors for such different genres...
so, what's ur opinion about this?

Hi V
Mohan's good work include "Vida Parayum Munpe" (Naseer in a rare good role) , "Alolam" , "Rachana" (a truly great film--watch it ) ,"Isabella" (I want to grow old like menon did --witha sumalatha to sleep with heh heh)
Then "Mukham"--detective film---not exactly his forte but ok.
And to add to this pathetic state we have an audience who accepts mediocrity as "great" work.A funny thing---one of my friends crticized that idiot vinayan's "karumadi kuttan" and bystanders said 'never ask him opinion on ANY films again"---------see people are easily conned. And this nandanam---well i know the recipe ---a bit of "nakhashathangal" , "ennennum kannettente" , "ilakkangal" and u have an "aesthetically revolutionary ?" nandanam. Many wud disagree but die-hard malayalam film lovers will see what i am tring to say.Show a tharavadu.grandma,pickles,thulasi-thara and a pavada-clad girl ----wham!! what have u --a "real nice malayalam " film. I liked ravanaprabhu as it was a more honest work----at least the dialogues of mohanlal were so contemporary .Mohanlal did a good job of the double role too.The awkward secnes between father-son were good.
Any comments , criticims --- all welcome

hi mahakavi lambotharan,
u said abt nandanam is correct or not i have no idea.. renjith rejected it and said tht movie can be similar but its his own work ... anyway the collection is a little bit dim yo .. only 21 lakhs in tvm ...but i didn't like ravanaprabhu .. its another trash .. but arram thapuran was brilliant ..
and dir: mohan is back ... he is directing film 'campus' starring madhu warrior [bro of manju],and daya[student of mohans wife]... rajan is the producer and cheriyan kalpakavadi does the script..it said to be big budget..
don't say abt vinayan film... he is one of the worst dir in malayalam film ... all the movies are trash ... the best thing abt vinayan movie is every movie has atleast one rape scence ...

Hello Jibi
Well u & me differ on ravanaprabhu---that's gud ,u r opininated.Mohan is comin back with campus---am scared by the name ---hope it won't be these bubble gum romances comin out of the tamil & hindi assembly lines. He burned his fingers by making "Angane oru avadhikalathu" by comromising to perceived market trends.Sigh!!! Just sad times for movie fans.
Can't get enuf of vinayan -bashing.Hope a couple of his films bombs and he is off the cinema scene for good.

Guys,I am that sree who replied last(Mar 10th).I dint know that there was already another sree who has been here for a longer time.I will change mine to"shree" from now.
Along with mohan,I think there were other guys who were always neglected. One is actor Sankaradi's son,(RAJAN(?) sankaradi)who directed Meenathil Thalikettu and some 2 other awesome movies.I don't remember the names.Another fellow whom I like is K.G.George who has done quite a few good movies.
And I agree about all that u said about Vinayan. He uses filthy language and rape scenes in all his movies.Until this guy came,I never believed that malayalis would enjoy his type of movies(usually all are sub-standard).With a bit of sentimental crap, like blind, menatally retarded...hero,who is being sworn at,his sis/fiancee getting raped....I thought such movies were restricted to tamil/telugu only.

This is a good topic and I felt nostalgic while reading some of the comments about movies in 80s. I feel that our concept of movies changed in to much worst level. Meeshamadhavan, kun*jikkooonan, nanadanam etc are only a relief to this pathetic stage. None of the movies clicked recently seemed to be great movies. All have our success formala like meesha, double meaning dialogues, thulasithara and songs. One movie brings the memory of so many movies. Infact we are spending so much time to find how many movies are combined in this movie, rather than thinking about its own story line.
Talking about new genres movies we need movies which can stand alone because of its merits. I feel 80s were the golden time for malayalam movies. SO many genius people were active in those years. MT, hariharan, Bharathan, Padmarajan, Joshi, IV sasi, Sibi, lohitadas. Even our Mammootty and Lal were geniuses at that time. So many movies we had. Great musicians we had. That was not the case before. Jayan ruled with his belbottom pants and nazir ruled with his romantic apprach. I think the present stage is somewhat similar to that.
I think all the producers and directors are having a wrong concept about the success of a movies. The concept of (chronic??)bachelor hero should need an amendment.
Even though the hero is at his 40s he forced to be brahmachari or a chronic bachelor. The reason behind his pathetic stage itself is the main part of so many movies. That was not the case in 80s. We had husband heros, father heros (remember mammootty's hits) with great success stories. When the star is getting more popularity somehow he is not able to marry or he is losing his wife. I mean, i am really fed up with this story lines. Just for keeping his bachelor he becomes gunda or a police officer. In those cases they can give reason for his "chronic bachelor hood".
The heroine should be at the age of 17~18. Heroine should not be a mother.
She should not be a serious girl.
Because of these concepts, the story is forcefully having so many restrictions and finally it reaches a stage which is causes much tension to all the people including the audience. While the script writer and director are in tension thinking about the climax, the audience are in tension to get the movie finished somehow. We always say that the second half is boring. The second half is considered to end the story somehow and if it doesn't happen they will kill the movie in the climax.
All movies are ending with a nearby marriage. A much predictable climax, even from the beginning. Finally all movies are become like celebrations ending with a
fireworks. How long we can have the same firework?
I wonder why malayalam film are not going after family stories. Do we really hate heroes with wife and kid? We had great movies in 80's and mammootty played so many family roles.
As so many others mentioned here thoovanathumpikal, amaram, bharatham, koodevide etc brings fragrance of new generic movies even now. While the new sensational movies brings vomiting tendency. Feeling like we had so much unwanted food. I am not telling all old movies are good. But 80s were great. We need to go back 80s movies for new genres movies.
