I don't know how many fans have appreciated this movie as I wish to do. I never considered this as an entertainment. rather a lesson to everyone. Hats off to Sathyan, Srinivasan and Mohanlal and other contributors.
This teaches a lesson how we should be consious about us personally and comes down heavily on relations and at first like might look pessimistic. In the end, when we face such experiences, we can feel this movie is realistic rather than pessimistic.

The family gives him a rousing welcome(Varavelpu!!) and expects that he is going back again to gulf to serve the family. But Lal fed up with Gulf life expresses his desire to stay in the home village for doing some business and reveals that his Visa expired.
Immdediately Janardhanan takes him away and indroduce him to his partners and convince him to invest his money in Liqour business. Lal agrees and reveals it to Oduvil. Uduvil criticises him and convinces him to start a AC restaurent. Lal agrees and tells it to Sangaradi. Sangaradi tells him in private bad about brothers and asks him to invest in Cocunut (Parambu) business. Lal being innocent is confused. Both brothers get angry and Lal finanly decides to buy a Bus.
Janardhanan recommends Innocent as driver and Jagatheesh as conductor and forces Lal to accept them as employees. Mammukoya serves as cleaner.
Revathy poor girl asks for a discount pass. Boby Kottarakara on behalf of Lal refuses and Revathy gets upset.
Innocent a poor driver starts lal's problems by knocking out a "Petti Kada" and costs him Rs 8000. When Lal abuses him, he is threatened by Murali a Bus Union Leader. Srinivasan a strict RTO adds to lal's woes declaring his Vehicle unfit often. Innocent hits Revathy and Lal begs Revathy falling on her legs to get rid of police case and Revathy agrees in exchange to monetary help to her family.
Lal gradually gets into debts. The family gradually boycotts him and not even inviting for food at all. At this time Ulsavam comes and Bus runs for 3 days non stop. Jagatheesh escapes with all the money. Lal mortgages the bus for his debts and becomes conductor. Mean time Revathy gradually comes closer to him.
Union Leader Murali threatens Lal to give the Job back to Jagatheesh. Lal refuses and one day he finds Jagatheesh on the road and gives him some slaps.
Jagatheesh with the help of Murali, initiates a strike against Lal and Labor officer Thilakan tries to make a compromise without success.
Lal gets court order to break strike and in revenge Murali with force breaks the bus. Thilakan supports Lal and the bus owner association refuses to support Lal fearing Murali.
Lal seeks help from brothers and they say some lay reasons and escape from him. Sangaradi also leaves even without bothering to hear Lal's worries. Lal gets closer to Revathy's family helping them.
Creditors take away Lal's bus as compensation. Revathy offers to give her house to get back the bus. Lal refuses and expresses his feelings in the last scene about relations he trusted and how much it cost him. Finally he leaves to Bombay to look for his chances in Gulf again.
It is only Revathy to give him a send off and the film ends with a sad feeling for Mohanlal Comparing the rousing welcome he received from the close relatives.
If you don't spend 2 drops of tears for the last scene, you must be Iron-Hearted.

ponnu sahodara Sree - I did not take your remarks seriously - I was simply trying to understand the joke - that is, what is the connection between Semester and Samaritans !!!! Pidi kitti yilla. Since Malayalam is not my mother-tongue, sometimes I have difficulty in understanding what people write here especially when it is in Manglish. To show that I don't take your remarks seriously, I will take your comment about equal opportunity and ladies as a joke !!! :)

Varavelpu was shot in Palakkad. The house that Mohanlal lived was a house by Prayiri. The bus route they took was Palakkad to Kootayi or Perugoturchi.

great movie...just saw it some weeks before again...mohanlal of those days...what a contrast to the one today, such a normal, innocent, down-to-earth guy...oru 'paavam'...
what i hated about this film was murali's character...the evil (the villian) was packed into this character unlike in any other films. u first get this impression that murali is just a normal trade union leader, fighting for the rights of the workers, but then when he starts defending jagadeesh and asking mohanlal to say sorry and appoint him again, makes u think: what the f*** is this guy saying??? this is one of those times when u wished u were in the movie to have a talk with murali, to show him how wrong he is.

Sandhesham
----------
Thilakan retiring from Railways serving 30 years from Tamilnadu returns to Kerala with Huge expectations about family and peacful future. He has 2 daughters. KPAC with 2 kids married to Mala Aravindan a tainted Sub Inspector. Second Daughter Madhu is yetr to be married. He has 3 sons. Sreenivasan Law Graduate is a communist party "Buththi Jeevi" and Jeyaram B.Sc graduate a Congress Party "Pravarthagan". Last son is doing SSLC(Thikkaram).
Except Madhu all are useless. Mala Arvind gets tarnsferred and eventually suspended for conspiracy for helping previous ruling communist party. Jeyaram and Srini quarrel daily for party affairs.
Initially Thilakan puts trust on Sons athat they will become big leaders and does not care about their irresponsibilities. Oduvil Unnikrishnan neighbor advises thilakan in vain.
One public gets killed in a fight between both parties and both parties try to make it a issue claiming the dead as theirs. Ruling party files case against Sreeni's friends and Sreeni gives them illegal accomadation in the house. Police searches and arrests Thilakan and puts him in Lock-Up for a day. Both Jeyaram and Sreeni will fight each other and won't even care to see Thilakan at lock up and make no efforts to bring him out. Siddique a local agri officer makes effort and Thilakan gets released.
Thialakan realizes his sons' nature and starts ignoring him. Jeyaram develops a quarrel with Siddique while asking for donation for party. Jeyaram costs Thilakan Rs 7500 by agreeing to provide lunch to party leader and 1000s of cadres without thilakan's knowledge.
By this time Siddique falls in love with Madhu and secures consent with Thilakan. Jeyaram challenges to stop the marriage and using politcal infleunces transfers him. By this time Mala Arvind decides to stay with full family in Thilakan's family and initiates quarrel with Jeyaram who thorws him out.
By this time Thilakan comes to know that his properties are in mortgage by Sreenivasan without his knowledge and they are seized by Bank. Thilakan left with no source of money, settles with a register marriage for Madhu and Siddique among tears.
Thilakan's wife Ponnamma gets a mild heart attack and hopitalized. Sreeni and Jearam willl be busy with a strike issue and refuse to come to hospital citing business. She gets discahrged and when thilakan comes back home, he sees both sons are busy at political activities and KPAC and Mala Arvind with a Lawyer to ask partition in house.
He takes a "Viswaroopam". First ousts all politicians out of the house. Then asks Mala to get oout and give a case against him if has guts. Gives a slap to Jeyaram for trying to stop the marriage and ask both sons to get out of the house.
Finally Oduvil convinces him and Sreeni and Jeyaram realize the mistakes and both pursue on getting the jobs.
Great perfomance by most of them. Sangaradi, Mammukoya, Oduvil bring good humor. Sreeni's "Pennu Nokkum Scene" is sim ply outstanding. Siddique too plays a cameo.
