Artistes to go on agitation against royalty demand
KOZHIKODE: Close on the heels of famed playback singer K J Yesudas demanding royalty for his songs, the Musicians Welfare Association today threatened to resort to agitation against the move to impose royalty on 'ganamelas' (musical concerts) and demanded the Kerala government's intervention in the matter.

Urging Chief Minister A K Antony to respond immediately on the issue, MWA President Salam and Secretary Sunil Kumar told mediapersons that ''thousands of artistes will be denied their livelihood if the royalty is imposed and the artistes will be left with no other option but to commit suicide, as in the cases of debt-trapped farmers, if the Government failed to address their problems.'' Yesudas had demanded royalty as per the Indian Performance Rights Society (IPRS) norms from others singing his songs, which led to a controversy with younger singers stiffly opposing it.

They argued that the eminent singer never paid royalty for singing his mentor Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar's songs as required under the IPRS regulations
