yes..such a beautiful movie.
And how the childhood of Apu is depicted! The magnets, sundials and whatnots scientific stuff is strongly reminiscent of the father Buendia of Marquez' One hundred years of solitude. And the scene in which apu's dad falls on the steps of ganga is shown so touchingly..! unforgettable..
btw what do you think about comments from some quarters that Ray made a big show of the poverty in India to make his movies popular in the West??

I would think Ray's inspiration came from reading the novel Pather Panchali by Bibhutibhushan Bannerji - the author captures the simplicity and mood of rural life with all the underlying complexities. Many novels lose their flavour when translated on screen but in Ray's hands, one can savour the experience all over again.

Malini,
I concur with u. But is it the same with 'Ghare Bhaire' too?

To answer a couple of questions above...
Anu: "Ray made a big show of the poverty in India to make his movies popular in the West"
Obviously a comment made by people with little knowledge, which is more dangerous than no knowledge. Apart from Pather Pachali (first of the trilogy), not a single movie of Ray depicts abject poverty. His stories are mainly based on Indian middle-class intrigues, which looks like poverty to the West, but in no case is there a situation whee the protagonists are suffering from malnutrition :-)
Malini: "I would think Ray's inspiration came from...Pather Panchali by Bibhutibhushan Bannerji...Many novels lose their flavour when translated on screen but in Ray's hands..."
eraMu: "...is it the same with 'Ghare Bhaire' too?"
Entirely true. Bibhutibhushans original novel is a "painting with words", remarkable for its simplicity, which has been aptly translated in the different medium by Ray. It is interesting to note that a lot of Ray films are based on previuosly published and successful stories by eminent authors. It would be very difficult to satisfy people who have already read impressive stories like Pather Pachali, Ghare Baire or Charulata (last two by Rabindranath) and has a preset notion. But Ray has always given a new dimension and angle to such literary works with his own touch that the product in the film medium has come out to be an acceptable translation, if not more. That is the beauty of his films!!
