Kutchery practices, conduct

Is there some code of conduct for kutcheries ?
The 'bhajana' goshti's of yore involved some kind of audience sing-along. Can the artistes walk around , talk or fixate on anyone in the audience ? Must they always face the audience. How much license does manodharma permit ?

Vasu,
Is this the casette in which KJY has sang a nereval in "pranava swaroopa vakra thundam"....Gosh!!!.
In my opinion...
I happen to hear it and it was pathetic both the diction and the singing itself. haris, you would still not change your taste if u try this.

Siva, haris:
Yes thats the recording. i did mention that his diction is not 'proper', but afa KJY is concerned, i always take it for granted instead of analysing. but i still think its good. its called "Live Classical Concert" Vol XIX, reld by Tharangini.
Nado: you may be right. it may be good to know where the "live" concerts are made, i tried it to find from the cd, but no info.

Vasu, the whole business of recording electronically and on tapes, LP's , spools carries some perils, I think, for CM which has typically been an aural/'remembered' tradition. ( This is a bit different from what happens to the gamaka or the mridangam sounds when 'saved' to tape )
To paraphrase Shkspr, The evil that men do lives on ... in their CD's..? The good should be picked up by worthy shishyas, if any exist.
Paradoxically, there are not many, say, MDR or TSKalyanaraman renditions around, but the imprint is indelible, even from the one or two live ones. Whether these should be frozen in time, like statues, paintings or stuffed (extinct) animals may also provide an interesting debate. What if an elderly SSI heard and was content with his own 'recordings' from the 30' and 40's ? But an aging TSK can also be painful to hear, live or otherwise.
Hankering for this or that voice/style may only be a fairly recent phenomenon in the overall scheme of the evolution of CM, though.

spools carries some perils - imprint is indelible - Hankering
Nado, you should have said well. but i dont' understand much what u actually said :-(( .. why dont' u simplify your sentences ( how can you help - if it is the simplest form ever u can come out with.. :-( ) - so that dumbO's ( saadhaa english ;-) ) like me can also understand.. and make use of...

oops, missed punctuation, Haris, spools used to be kind of a forerunner of cassette tapes. I am sure you can tell MDR's characteristic voice anywhere, even after hearing it only once. 'Hankering' is kind of a rougher term for yearning or longing.

e.g. you might say, I have a Yearning for my neighbour's wife !
whereas you might say I have a Hankering for my neighbour's wife's cooking !!

What do you guys think about the attitude of violinists on their seating position.. I have seen MSG trying to face the crowd even when accompanying !

Narayanan - MSG is always a little pushy and likes to dominate right??? Did you attend KVN's Sangeetha Kalanidhi concert - he sang "ShankaraBharananai Azhaithodi vaadi Kalyaani darbaarukku" Pallavi" and MSG accompanied him on the violin... Apparently, MSG had called KVN a couple days before the concert to get some info on the RTP and KVN had not decided at that point... MSG got offended and if you listen to that concert you could feel that he was constantly trying to dominate and indeed played a superb RTP (more out of vengeance !) :::))) – in fact applause was all his :)

Maybe MSG is trying to get a better position for his violin sound onto the mikes for recordings etc. In poorer recordings you can actually tell exactly when the vocal artist is looking away from the mike and singing.
Do many vocalists use their palms to close one ear while trying to maintain 'shruti' ? Is this a sign of mismatched shrutis between violinist and vocalist ?
It would be interesting to have artistes give a kutchery while using ear-plugs in both ears. This may give an idea of feed-back ?? May, however, need a box of said ear-plugs for the audience too.

Singing with a finger in (or palm over) one ear goes with a certain British folk-singing steriotype from 1965! I never saw an Idian musician do this (yet -- others obviously have different experience).
Isn't the whole point of the sruti box/tampura to give constant reference point for struti: so the block it out would defeat the object.

In their (whirlwind) US concerts many concerts are scheduled consecutively and within generally geographical clusters ( for logistics etc. ) As a result, artistes sometimes use the same set-up for New Jersey as for, say Washington or Pittsburgh. I once followed one of these artistes to different but proximal locations and made my presence felt in both cases. Only a different Madhyamavati kriti appeared for my troubles, in the major raga chosen. There was other overlap too, starting varnas and shorter pieces. Variability came only at the expense of audience requests. I appreciate there is coordination required between artistes and that no one expects the same faces in the audience. But sometimes this is a crutch used by the touring pros.
