Dear kalpana, VERY briefly, in the Indian Classical world, northern music is less structured and more dyanamic in melody (raaga) and rhythm (Taala) compared to the south where it is more conservative and "purer". In terms of instruments, northern is typically sitar/harmonium accompanied by tabla whereas southern is veena/violin accompanied by mirdangam. This is not a hard-and-fast-rule but just a very generalised concept. As example try to listen to Hariharan,s Visaal album (nothern) and something by Yesudoss (southern). love feedback.
