My personal choice is semmangudi coz i think with my limited knowledge that his improvisations (both aalapana and manodharma)are the fastest and most complicated technically-i was bowled over by his rendering of kamakshi(bhairavi) and bhavanutha(mohanam).

Nithyasree Mahadevan - her sense of pitch, and brilliant renditions
her concerts prove it and her albums are even better

Balamuralikrishna: Always top of my list! However complex and over-my-head what he is doing may be it is *always* beautiful.
TVG: for the thrills (as a singer and as a mridangist)
TN Krishnan: again for beauty dripping from his violin
and many more... :-)
Thanks for the no mud-slinging rule!

My favourite is Chembai. I have heard all the major musicians including Semmangudi and Chembai singing Kamakshi Swarajati(Bhairavi), but Chembai is best in giving life to a song, whereas Semmangudi's is like a lullaby.

aren't the styles of chembai and semmangudi totally different? What i have felt is chembai is definitely blessed with a melodious voice and his style is really buoyant-but semmangudi i compare him to stanley kubrick-less appealing to people lookin for melody the way he freaks out during his manodharma -that is ample proof for how fast he can improvise

K.V.Narayanaswami - His music was steeped in bhava. His rendition was without fail always drenched with feeling and it was not just the artist who felt the bhava... it was also the audience . He will be missed

My choice would be TK Rengachari. His niraval and swaraprastharm were unique. IMHO this technique is being followed by Prof TRS and not even by Vairamangalam his own disciple. Academy has failed in honouring him even w/o offering 'Kala acharya' normally a bait to evade from future consideration for sangeetha kalanidhi nomination. This reminds me of Sangeetha Pithamah's speech during papanasam sivan's sadas. He mentioned that the curse of not honouring TR Mahalingam and Thiruvadurai still engulfs the Academy.

My favourite carnatic musician is Bavanishanthbavanan Sooriyapava.
THis is because he is able to play the tambura and sing beautifully while kicking me in the shin.
