Thanjavur Udhayashankar Joshi was a versatile musician who specialised in rare ragas. He was a disciple of Pozhakudi brothers and also a contemporary of Mirudangam maestro Upendran. Both studied together till school final. Since Joshi opted to stay at Thanjavur [like Lakshminarayanan(Nanu) and L. Venkatesa Iyengar], he could not come to the forefront of Carnatic field. His passing away recently is a great loss to the music world.

This news seems to have gone unnoticed in any of the websites.I saw these two names in an article in The Hindu by Gowri Ramnarayan on Music in Tanjavur and specifically referred to these two musicians L.Venkatesa Iyengar as a musician's musician and Joshi as a specialist in rare ragas.

Just curious,
Have you or anyone heard any of these people atleast in the AIR or elsewhere?

Yes. You are right. If I remember correct both of them have participated in the grand music gala at chennai once, long back [year I don't recollect] and also given lot of concerts in AIR Trichy [as it is closeby to Thanjavur, an added advantage for them topay homage to saint Thygaraja at Tiruvaiyaru every year]. Thanks for the URL reference.

btw Do you knw who the Pozhakudi brothers? I can't seem to find any information on them other than the fact that D.Pattammal (the composeress) trained under Pozhakudi Ganesa Iyer.Is Pozhakudi Ganesa Iyer one of them or atleast related to them?

P.V. Ganesa iyer and Ramaiya were known as Pozhakudi Bros. Like Alathoor, they were not related to each other and also less known as opted to stay at Thanjavur itself. O.V. Subramaniam an associate of these bros shifted to Delhi ~45 yrs back. All the three are Sangeetha Bhushanams of Annamali University. BTW where can I get more information about D. Pattammal?

Vidya,
I have heard Udhayshankar Joshi's AIR and Doordarshan concerts. Did not notice anything extraordinary in his singing.
PV Ganesa Iyer has a lot of students. (Sri, who conducts Ragam Sangeetham in Raj TV is his student?!) I remember him preparing a band of students to sing in competitions including the ones at Trichy Finearts, Karaikudi Tamizh Isai Sangam, Madurai Sathguru Sangeetha SAmajam etc. I have never heard a concert of his.

All the three stalwarts along with T.K. Rangachari were propogating canatic music in and around Thanjavur in earlier years. Ramaiaya's role as vedhiyar in Nandanar was a feast to all music lovers in those days.
