Hey guys,
My name is Shyam Laxminarayanan from UC Berkeley. I am a big fan of carnatic music, and would love to join this forum. What do you guys think of MLV? Also does she have any compositions of her own?

  Shyam : MLV has no compositions to her credit. She had helped her mother publish Purandaradasa's kirtanas and had popularized the works of many a composer but surprisingly did not compose any of her own!

  Not only has she set to music a mammoth of the saint-bard's compositions, but also other compositions such as Tarangams, Ashtapadis, etc. which are even till today rendered in the same ragas she had set them in. Some popular ones like Caranam Bhava Karunamayi(Hamsavinodhini) of Narayana Theertar, the ashtapadi Sancaradadhara(Mohanam, Gavathi, Yaman Kalyani, Sindu Bhairavi) & Yadavaraya (Puriya Dhanashri, Jonpuri & Durga) are favorites today.

  There is a difference between composing and tuning a composition. Sure MLV has perhaps tuned many compositions. But she herself has not composed any of her own. V.S.Gomatishankara Iyer and Mayuram Vishvanatha Shastri have tuned a large number of verses from Tirukkural. K.S.Krishnamurti has published a book of Arutpas tuned by him. Most of Ambujam Krishna's compositions have been tuned by others. Do we disregard them as composers or do we give credit for these songs to those who set them to music?

  Sorry - CharaNam Bhava was tuned in Hamsavinodhini by Sri TMT and not MLV.

  Doesn't Yaadavaraaya krishna start in "Basant" or is it Puriya-danashri?
