Does that mean you got a single trace atleast of Da1?

I don't know; I just couldn't readily identify any Da2 usage.

"Mottu vitta mulla kodi"....i dont think u need to even check the swaras. The charanams are clear indicaitons..."in geli podhumadi...maanga thinnum neramadi"...clearly charukesi to me. Also the pallavi lines "kanni ponne naan irukka acham enna unakku"....
"Chinna ponnu chinna ponnu" has some strange pattern. I will elaborate more.
In "oru kaaviyam"...Da2 Irukke....It is used....e.g. see the first line of the charanams....there is Da2 usage. Overall, i do agree that it is scant. But one of the characteristic phrase of gowrimanohari is a progression (ascending as well as descending) that is devoid of dhaivatham (ga)...You can see that in most of the gowrimanohari songs of IR...Even "paatum naane bhaavamum naane", a legendary gowrimanohari of yesteryears has this phrase that skips Da2.

oops typo ...
progression (ascending as well as descending) that is devoid of dhaivatham (ga)...
it should be
devoid of dhaivatham (dha) :-)

Dear All..
The dictionary defines the word infinitesimal as - "An immeasurably or incalculably minute amount or quantity..." .....Thamizh'la NAGASU velai'nnu solluvaanga (an art form wherein sculptors use just their finger nails or something).. So we are talking about something that is very subtle...an art-form, but is very delicate & fine..There are several such points that are there to be discussed in IR's songs.
The song that triggered me onto to this topic is the song "En Kanavinai Kel Nanba" from Desiya Geedham. I think no one other than IR can afford to put so much hard work into one single song, and still keep it all neatly covered under a simple looking format.
The scale used is neethimathi...| S R2 G2 M2 P D3 N3 S | S N3 D3 P M2 G2 R2 S....a rather stiff scale dont u think? But i think IR has a reason. Seeing by his previous usage of the scale (in ulagame nee manidhanai in Ivan), i think he opts it for its raga quality to convey deeply felt anger against social evils and is suited for situations that need to convey revolutionary mood. Both the songs have this 'social welfare' agenda in common. But again, he has also used it in the love song "oh prema devathe" in the kannada film Gulabi. With IR, you never know. It just does not matter what scale he is using. He is able to bend it down to suit his desired mood. Like using a grim dharmavathy in 'meendum meendum vaa' (vikram)...
Now here are some other points that leave me dumbfounded each time i listen to this song "en kanavinai kel nanba" from desiya geedham...
a) If you listen carefully, the intricate accompanying orchestra work (BGM) in this is at a staggering level (more while the lead voice is singing rather than in preludes and interludes).
b) The very format of the song - Did you see how much of "controlled" & "dignified" outburst the song and BGM conveys? It is direct contrast to "manidha manidha ini un vizhigal" or latest "adada adangadha" from pithamagan..This is probably since the lead characters are well educated, and thus the song's mood as designed by IR is "controlled aggression". Dont u feel that the accompanying BGM u hear is suprisingly "soft" but it also is successful in conveying the anguish, anger.
c) in the pallavi...listen to the soft-rockish guitar use in between "idhu maara vendum, pasi aara vendum"
c) listen to the trumpet (is this the instrument BTW?) usage in charanam when the lines go as "yezhai nenjil kodi aasaigal, seidhadhenna ungal arasugal"...Staggering..it starts and ends off on its own, as a short musical outburst...superb.

Hey guys, what's up? I saw the song 'Kanni Ponnu' (Ninaivellaam Nithya) mapped to Hamsanadham raagam. Is this correct?

Guys, I am wondering; I am hearing a fantastic folk song 'Kaana Karungkuyile' from the film Paandi Durai, sang by SP Balasubramaniam and Swarnalatha. Is the song based on Bhagesri raagam? Pahadi? Or can the melody be mapped to any raaga?

'Kannan Oru Kaikkuzhandhai' is set to Mohanam scale with the addition of Ni3 in the avarohanam. But raagawise, I think it still rests within the boundaries of Mohanam.

Thanks Purv.
Also are "Jodhpuri" and "Darbari Kannada" one and the same.? .. Someone Violin Wiz on SUN TV was saying that about the " Agaaaya Vennilaave " song .. Thanks

MSK, I'm sure that Darbari Kaanada and Jodhpuri (Jonpuri?) are not one and the same. Darbari Kaanada has some raaga-characteristic vakrams, and I don't know how to identify Jonpuri raagam.

Thanks Purv.. So does that mean "Aagaaya Vennilaave" has some deviations from Darbari Kanaada .? Thx MSK

MSK,
These two ragas will be differentiated only by the usage or the non usages of certain characteristic phrases and also based on the feel...
Jonpuri, i learn, is S R2 M1 P D1 N2 S in ascent and S N2 D1 P M1 G2 R2 S....(thats natabhairavi notes basically wherein arohanam misses G2)
It is said that Jonpuri needs to have a characteristic phrase of Pa Sa Dha....
Dharbari kanada on the other hand S R2 G2 M1 P D1 N2 S I S D1 N2 P M1 P G2 M1 R2 S...I am not well aware of Jonpuri based compositions, but dont you think the song 'aagaaya vennilaave' has several tons of dharbari kanada flavour...(some kanada too IMHO, in the charanam lines Adiyaalin jeevanai nee adhigaram seivadhenna)
Well, right at the start, the male & female voice sing one line without any BGM accompanying it...it is immediately followed by a veenai piece..sounds pretty much Dharbari Kaanada to me :-)
Interesting thing to discuss !!!

Hi. I would like to make one wee correction: the song 'Andaalalo Namo' from JVAS I think is Sudhasaveri rather than Mohanam. Does anyone want to give a second opinion here?

I would like to know where the non-film albums of Ilayaraaja : "Nothing But Wind" and "How to Name it" are available.
I have read a lot about these albums but my efforts to find them have been futile.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
