Pick #991

Song: vAzvil thAnE
Film: Digambara Samiyar
Music: G.Ramanathan & S.M.Subbiah Naidu
Lyrics: One of (Ka.Mu.Sheriff, A.Maruthakasi, K.P.Kamatchisundaram, Kannadasan, Thanjai Ramiahdas)
Singer: K.V.Janaki
Year: 1950

Digambara Samiyar produced by Modern Theaters is the screen version of a detective novel written by the then popular fiction writer Vaduvoor K. Duraiswami Iyengar. The lead character Digambara Samiyar was played by M.N.Nambiyar. Others stars include Narasimhabharathi, M.S.Draupadi, Lakshmiprabha and M.G.Chakrapani. Some songs in the film were tunes borrowed from Hindi.

Today's pick was picturized on M.S.Draupadhi who paired with Narasimhabharati. Draupadhi started her film career in the early 1940s as a teen. A small woman but a fine actress with a great screen presence, Draupadhi acted in films for nearly two decades playing lead characters or dominant supporting roles. Some of her films include Gumasthavin Penn(1941), Digambara Samiyar(1950), Andaman Kaithi(1952), Velaikkaran(1952), Pasiyin Kodumai(1952), Inspector(1953), Raththa Pasam(1954), Puthu Yugam(1954), Aravalli(1957). She was also an actress in the TKS brothers' theater group. Not much more information is available about this fine actress.

Usha,
Guessing that you did not expect a sad song. Draupadhi's parents try to force her into marriage with one of the villains in the film. She runs away from home to escape the marraige and her abusive mother. She is in love with the nice guy Narasimhabharati who protects her from the villains. People in the town gossip about her. Draupadhi sings the song in this context.

Nidhi80, apparenty, yes. Based on others' posts. Smile

madhu, ungga post enggE?

vicky, thanks.

Pick #992

Song: mAppiLLai pAr
Film: Digambara Samiyar
Music: G.Ramanathan & S.M.Subbiah Naidu
Lyrics: One of (Ka.Mu.Sheriff, A.Maruthakasi, K.P.Kamatchisundaram, Kannadasan, Thanjai Ramiahdas)
Singers: Two of (U.R.Chandra, K.P.Komalam, Gajalakshmi, P.Leela)
Year: 1950

Nature is so unfair. Or else it would not move so much beauty and talent into one family. The beautiful dancing sisters Lalita and Padmini pair up for the dance sequence of today's pick. They tease the bride and groom at a wedding. A lovely light dance with perfect expressions and gestures by the sisters. Of course the two singing voices are absolutely cute too.

mAppiLLai pAr
