Right from the silent era, black & white, colour, 70mm, cinemascope etc., tamil films has come a loooong way. How many greats we have here…great stories, great dialogues, great films, directors, actors, actresses, comedians….you name it and we have it here. We should really be proud of this medium which has been a part of our lives.

Now, in this thread let’s discuss about the Most Lovable and Favourite characters on screen that has made a great impact on us. Was there a similar thread here, before ?? Sorry, I don’t remember.

It could be anybody – a new comer, the protagonist, antagonist, comedian and even a person who did a cameo. Adhukkaga Rama Narayanan sir padathula varra yana, Poona, naai, paambu pondra uyirinagala ellam sollapadadhu. Also, in some of the films they used to say that a phone is a character, a letter is a character, a building is a character, train is a character etc., andha madhiri motifs or “ akrinai “ ellam chelladhu chelladhu !!

And my suggestion would be that let’s not discuss too much about the legends or popular stars in this thread as we have separate threads for them – it’s only a suggestion but the real intnetion is to have fun & to share our thoughts & experience.

Let me start with Manohar, the carefree, nonchalant and charming young man who stole Divya’s heart and met an untimely & early end. It’s only for about 20-25 minutes that he comes on screen but, My God !! what an impact he had made. And, obviously this film made Karthik an over-night star. Almost every young girl, particularly College girls went berserk whenever they saw him on screen. Apart from having unanimous support from the girls, this character has earned lots & lots of accolades from people of various walks of life as well. I’ve myself seen many times that a group of audience come only to watch this particular “ Karthik portion “ in the film and they just walk out of the theatre after Manohar dies.

Yes, Manohar is one of my favourite on-screen character.

The tv intree bit of public where on guy says he has had to shift out of the city:

Had me and my friend (who was searching for a house then), in splits. Even now he is hunting for affordable, good accomodation and is faced with outrageously distant choices. We keep referring to this line in the discussions.

Equa's line about the rage being essentially 'middle class' in its roots is true. But why is that a failing ?

i wanted to respond to P_R abt alienating stuff - director just alienates us.......it was a self-righteous, rhetoric at current day's economic imbalance, to please the gallery........at best, it can be called a "Dark" shankar movie......did the director research on real reason for economic imbalance in this country?? do u think price rise in real estate is just bcos of IT guys?? adhula evalavu factors irukku.....DKMB

MADDY, what is "logical jealousy" ? What is நியாயமான ஆத்திரம் ?
Does someone's pain become unreal because it is not justifiable ? That was all the movie was about, in my reading. In fact I had even ventured to say it was about an artist's arrogance. The artist believes he is a superior being. But he is treated with scorn by the society, which doesn't have the 'ability' to understand him and will only abuse him work - by making a pimp out of him to impress a girl to get laid.

That the gallery chose to be pleased and missed the point can't be held against the film. Thank God, it didn't bother doing the research on the economic conditions etc.

Well, because the population that the film intends to “represent” is hardly middle-class! (Prabhakar is, but that's exactly my criticism.) On the contrary, the new middle class is what Prabhakar sees all over the IT companies. (Ram even crosscuts the scene in the IT company his friend is working at, with a lunch-time scene in a yesteryear government office.) And the questions/concerns regarding the various courses available for students to take (again very middle-class), etc. is to completely miss the point. Prabhakar happens to choose the Tamil course for some reasons (and the film builds its questions on top of this), but is that actually how people get thrown into completely different worlds? Throughout the film, Prabhakar remains this exception who talks for “those people.”

KT is just a chennai-centric story!
Middle class kiddle class ellam othukka mudiyaadhu, 1000-2000-thukellam plot vaangi pottavan ellam ippo 50L, 70L sambadhichitrukaan. Just watch the queue at jewel and textile shops, I find this only in the past 7 years. Its a sequential of growth. IT mattum valaralaye...?

Btw Chennai has become such a confused city!

jealousy-e illogical dhaan-nnu sonnen......there are some sections of people who are really deprived and if they feel sore, it makes a point.......to show his pain, if he tells "unfair/unreal" things abt us - i dont take it lightly and my "shane warne salute" to his arrogance.......

nee sollu pa, how many of you and your colleagues own a house in chennai (not daddy/mummy's)?? this film builds a surreal environment and twisted situations/ comic book IT employee characters to make the point.......and equa solra madhiri adhuvum panradhilla.....

Equa, excepting himself, was part of the ego-preservation, which was important in the film I thought.

MADDY, understand, but that precisely is the point. We are talking in circles, iththOda niruthikkuvOm.

There is no defending some parts of the movie, much as a like. The film may not stand up, but it raised some astounding tangential lines of thinking for me, like no other film in recent times.

puriyudhu, idhellAm munnAdiyE pEsittomE. My criticism is not on how Prabhakar preserves his ago by saying that he's not the average Munusami, but that the film doesn't offer anything else on this matter. By taking the exception route, the film fails to bring up the questions that are sociologically relevant.

நிறைய படங்களில் ஹீரோ ஒரு திருடன் (அதாவது பிக்பாக்கெட் ரேஞ்சில் திருட்டுத் தொழில் செய்பவன்) என்றிருந்தால், திருவிழாவில் காணாமல் போன "பெரிய வீட்டுப்" பையனாக இருப்பான். இது பெரிய வீட்டுப் பசங்க "ஒரு திருடனா இருந்து பார்த்துப்" புரிந்துகொள்ள வசதியாக இருக்க, கதையில் வைக்கப்படும் ஒரு செயற்கைச் சித்திரம்.

she is not a courtesan, though, but as a very practical woman, she enjoys the patronage of rich zamindar's and land lords.
