VIJAYAKANTH - Profile

Vijayaraj Azhagarswami Naidu (born August 25, 1952), professionally known by his stage name Vijayakanth, is a Tamil film actor and politician in Tamil Nadu, India. He is the founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam and a Member of Legislative Assembly representing Virudhachalam, Tamil Nadu, India.

Early life

Vijayakanth was born as Vijayaraj Azhagar Swami Naidu on August 25, 1952 in Madurai, India. His parents are K. N. Alagarswami Naidu and Aandal Azhagarswami who hailed from most prominent Balija Naidu family of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. He married Premalatha on January 31, 1990 and had two sons named Vijay Prabhakar and Shanmuga Pandian. Upon entering the film industry to pursue an acting career, he changed his name to "Vijayakanth", dropping the "raj" out of his name and suffixing "kanth," by director Khaja . He is nicknamed "Captain" which was taken from one of his popular films Captain Prabhakharan.

Career

Vijayakanth has starred in various hits such as like Amman Koil Kizhakkaley, Vaidegi Kathirundal, Chinna Gounder, Vallarasu, Vanathai Pola,Sethupathi IPS, Captian Prabakaran, Ulavu Thurai,Periyanna, Kannupada Pokuthayya ,Ramana, Neranja Manasu, Sabari. He was considered as the Third major star in Tamil films after Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan in the 80s and early 90s till now. He is instrumental in giving break to actors like Mansoor Ali Khan , Livingston, Saroja Sampath and Sarath Kumar . Of late he has stopped accepting offers from other producers and is also keen in acting on his own banner films.

Vijayakanth has given Blockbuster hits like Amman Koil Kizhakkaley,Vaidegi Kathirundal,Thavasi, Chinna Gounder, Vallarasu, Vaanaththaepole , Kannupada Pokuthayya and Ramana. He was considered as the third major star in Tamil films after Kamal Haasan and Rajni Kanth in Eighties and Earlier Nineties.He is instrumental in giving break to actor like Manzoor Ali Khan and Supreme Star Sarath Kumar. He has a very large fan base mainly in B and C centres.His Action Fims dubbed into Telugu often does good business.He has a peculiar style of fighting especially with his leg kicks which is very popular among fans. His famous dialogue from the film Narasimma 'Currenta thotta sadharna manishan thaan shock adikum. ana na Narasimma. Narasimmava thota currentuku thaan shock adikum' is also very popular. Vijayakanth is the only leading actor from Tamil Film Industry who has done only Tamil Films in his entire filmography of 150 Films. Moreover he has the habit of giving break to New directors. After a string of Average films, Arasangam , Vijayakanth's 150th film was declared as Super Hit.

He has been involved in several charity works. Vijayakanth served as the President of Nadigar Sangam before entering politics and was instrumental in holding star nite shows in Dubai and Malaysia. He bailed out Nadigar Sangam from huge debts during his tenure.
Vijaykanth as the leader of the Nadikar Sangam has proved to be a good administrator and able leader.

Awards and honours

Vijayakanth as been honoured with several allocades and awards from associations, such as Filmfare, Cinema Express, Cinema Studio, Malai Malar, Peasum Padam, Dinakaran, Makkal Kural, and the Mathi Arts Academy. In 2001, he was given the title and award of Kalaimamani from the Government of Tamil Nadu.

1981 - "Thoorathu Idimuzhakkam" selected for World Film Festival in Delhi.

1986 - Filmfare Best Actor Award for Amman Koyil Kizhakalae
1989 - Cinema Express Best Actor Award for Poonthotta Kavalkaran
1989 - Filmfans Award for Best Actor Award for Chindura Poove
2001 - Kalaimamani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu
2001 - Best Citizen Award by the mayor of the City of Houston, Texas and Best Indian Citizen Award by Citizens of India forum.
2001 - Cinema Express Best Actor Award for Vanathai Pole

Sila pala young heroes threadlAm onyum thEralai - only thudhi paadufying illainA getup super level discussions. adhukku mEla sarakkE illai pOla. I agree with you, Vijayakanth is looked down upon compared to today's young heroes - and he is much better than many of them even in acting, not just action.

  Honest, er.. if you bring his competitors, I'd have to place him below (obviously) the big two and even Prabhu and Karthik. Sathyaraj and Sarath will be behind. And after Pazhassi Raja, I'd have to give some additional credit to Sarath

  When I was posting about competition among the films, I missed this one:
  
  Captain Prabhakaran --->
  action film with one group song & an item number, with no comedy track & very less family sentiment... had to compete with a film fully loaded with family sentiments, superb melodies & evergreen comedy with a chubby hero in the lead paired with beautiful actress ..... those who cant identify the film....... it is CHINNA THAMBI
  
  CT might have better returns / percentage of profit shud be much higher than CP..... but the point to be noted is, when there is no tamil satellite channels, cinema profits are mostly from family audience.. so CT becoming a blockbuster is not a surprise...
