Divya Desam

These are the Sri Vaishnava temples that the Alvars (saints) have sung praises (mangalasasanam). There are 108 divya desams and only 106 are in this material world.

As there are a many online sites providing information and images of the divya desams. This topic attempts to provide some rare information on these temples and also explore the less known divya desams.

1) Thiruppullam Boothankudi - Sri Valvil Ramar Perumal Temple, Kumbakonam

This divya desam is situated in Tanjore district Tamil Nadu. 3 miles away from Swami Malai (famous Murugan Temple).

This is where Sri Rama performed the final funeral rites for Jadayu (the Eagle bird). This sthalam takes its name "Pull" from the Eagle clan of Jatayu.

1 and 1/2 Km. from here, is a small village, Mandanggudi which is the birth place of Thondar Adi Podi Alwar.

Dear Jimano,

Thanks for writing about Thirupullani. It is also known as Adhi Jagannathar Thirukovil. It was not just a Yagna by Dasaratha but it was the Puthira Kaamesti Yaagam and the mythology is he got the Paayasam after the Yaagam, which he gave it to all his three wives. That's why people who are not blessed with children come here and pray.

Perumal's name is Adhi Jgannathar and Thaayaar is Padmasani.

Sethu Karai is to Vaishanavites what Rameswaram is to Saivaites. The temple is 15 kms from Ramnad town from where buses operate. The Sethukarai is 5 kms from the temple and you can get Autos.

3) Sri Rangam - Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple (Final Part)

Sri Rangam - Colonial History - 18th to 19th Century

Sri Rangam Temple was under French control for 6 years. Nawab Chanda Saheb (1736-1740) alllied with the French and established his rule in Sri Rangam. Constantly harrassing the temple the Nawab managed to extracted huge tributes from the temple.

Ananda Ranga Pillai, a courtier of Dupleix (French Commander), writes in his dairy that the French intended to destroy Sri Rangam temple just as they destroyed the nearby Jambukesvaram temple; the residents had the temple saved by paying a ransom of Rs. 60,000 and the grains.

Later, when the British invaded the Srirangam, the Rajputs who served under the Nawab put up a strong resistence to protect the temple from the British, who had to abandoned their plans to attack the temple.

Before 1987, Sri Rangam's south gopuram (tower) remain incomplete. Many Kings and devotees had tried to complete its construction but their attempts failed and fell to pieces. In 1980, the 44th pontiff of the Ahobila Mutt - Azhagiyasingar, undertook the work for constructing the 236 feet tall Raja gopuram which was consecrated in 1987.

Yes this does have the potential to hurt sentiments. I know Jimano has quoted this as being just a belief amongst some people and by no means established as any thing else.

Still, in the interests of public sentiment, Jimano, you may want to revisit your post and edit it.

Sudhaama: By quoting it you have further brought people's attention to it!!! Now even if Jimano removes or edits that bit, it will still remain because you have quoted it. Could you please also remove your post, or edit it so that the very thing you are trying to get removed does not still remain as part of your own posting?

No Murali. It is said to be before. Because as you know, after the ravana vadham Sita & Rama took the aerial flight back to Ayodhya. They did stop in different places but not resting as Darba Shayanam.

.Thiruppullani / THIRU-PUL-ANHAI is.. Sethu.!!!

Thiru-Pul-Anhai... meaning DHARBHA-SAYANAM..

...has taken the subsequent Colloqual shape as THIRUPPULLANHI.

Rama built the Sethu Bund from here to Lanka.. as per 18 Puranas.

Prior to the commencement of Sethu-bund construction... as per formality, Rama soiught the co-operation and permission from Samudra-raja...

..by praying to him in Yoga form by lying-down on Dharba-Grass spread... courteously as stipulated for Mankind.

But Samudra-Raja became proud... thinking "Ha.! even the Lord Supreme Vishnu is praying me.... Ah.! How Great God I am.!"

...and so he did not turn up... responding to Rama's penance.

Even after the strenuous prayer... the Samudra-Raja became haughty... and neglected Rama...

..He got angry... and shouted "Oh Lakshmana.. get me my Bows and Arrows.. Just with one Arrow, I will dry up the whole ocean...

...such that our Army can march by walking on the dry Sea-Bed.!"

On hearing this ultimatum... Samudra-raja realised his folly... rushed to Rama and apologised.

Then the further process went smooth.

Rama-sena built the Sethu-bund from this point towards the other shore at Lanka.

The Adhi-Jagannatha peruma Templel here... is one of the oldest and ancient in India combined with high values...

...existing from even before Thretha-yugam of Rama's era..

...and was worshipped by Lord Rama and Vibheeshana too.

Yes. This is the place of VIBHEESHANA-SARANAGATHI too...

... since Vibheeshana met Rama and joined with Him here.

After winning the War.. the Vaanara Sena appealed to Rama to take all of them to Ayodhya...

...enabling them to have the pleasure of seeing Rama-Pattabhishekam.

But Rama did not agree.. and asked all of them to wait at this place Thiruppullani alias Sethu..

...and that He would render Darsanam to them the Live- Scene of Pattabhishekam... at Ayodhya

Accordingly all of his Sena could have Pattabhi-rama Darsanam here...

...when Rama's coronation took place at Ayodhya in the presence of Sugreeva....

..while his Sena was left behind at Thiruppullani.

. It was complied so. The same Darsanam continues here now too..

...as the Lord of Rama-Temple here is Pattabhirama.!

Valmiki narrates that... Rama did not halt anywhere in between... during his flight from Lanka to Ayodhya...

...and while so flying in Pushpaka Vimana to Ayodhya... Rama told Seetha showing this place from sky...

"This is Sethu... from where we built the Sethu-bandanam... Bund.

...Sethu is the holy place for the Devotees eternally.

...Since Dasaratha conducted Puthra-Kameshti Yagam at this place...

..got the Sacred Payasam which he distributed to his three wives at this Punya- Kshethra..

Thus this Sethu has become holy in one more way too... to fetch child for the childless.

Even now-a-days the Prasadam served to the Devotees in the Temple is Payasam...

...signifying the Puthra-Kameshti Yaga Payasa prasadam...

..blessing in all respects. too.!!!

Can any one list the pasurams per divyadesams.. I mean a list containing:-

1. Name of divyadesam
2. Name of the book containg pasurams on the desam.
3. Name of the alwar (author)
4. Serial Numbers of the pasurams out of 4000.

Kanchipuram - Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple (Hastigiri)

Kanchipuram is one of the seven holy cities and a major religious centre for saivites and vaisnavites..

Temple Legend

The deity is believed to be worshipped by Lord Brahma in Krita Yuga, Gajendra in Treta Yuga, Brihaspati in Dvapara Yuga and Ananta Sesha in Kali Yuga.

Ramanuja's association with the temple

Ramanuja served in this temple before moving to Sri Rangam. Kanchipurna (Ramanuja's mentor) used to perform fanning service to Lord Varada and the The Lord would speak to Kanchipurna during fanning. Through Kanchipurna, Lord Varadaraja
cleared Ramanuja's doubts on Sri vaisnavism and instructed him to accept Mahapurna as his guru.

From Lord Varadaraja, Ramanuja took his sanyasa and received the title Yatiraja (king of ascetics).

Temple Specialities

a) Once in every 40 years the wooden deity Atthi Varada which is submerged in the temple pond, is retrieved and worshipped oppulently for 48 days.

b) Spiced Kanchipuram idli is a special prasadam of this temple.

c) A shrine housing a gold and silver lizards

Dear NOV,

Unable to understand... what additional information you seek for.?

The informations furnished already include the COMMON NAMES of the Kshethras.

Two points to be mentioned are..

- [1] There are NO DIVYA-DESAS sung by Alwars in Nilgiris, Mysore regions...

..except one Ramanuja's ABHIMANA-KSHETHRA... established by Him anew...

...named THIRU-NARAYANAPURAM / Melkote... in Karnataka state.

- [2] Guruvayur does not form part of Alwars' Divya desas...

..although it exists ever since Dwapara yuga.
