Well how about starting a thread for our favorite Chennai SuperKings Very Happy

With the IPL barely ten days away....this is probably the best time to open a thread for our Super Kings. Owned by India Cements Ltd., this Chennai franchise of the IPL has already caught the imagination of the cricket crazy people in Chennai.

The name "Super Kings" is to honor the rulers of the golden era of Tamil culture, the team logo has a Lion to reflect the King of the Jungle. In addition the word "Super" is colloquially used in the state of Tamil Nadu to reflect all things thrilling and exciting and is a word of the lips of almost every one in Tamil Nadu

kalyasi, naanum Cr-ume kkoda Dhoni mattamana captaincynu sollaliye. Enge critcise pannanamo ange criticise pannanumnu dhaane. yeah, I have my 'parochial' theory - as I said, it is just a theory based on certain data points (4-5 data points) as PR said.

At the end of the day, he is human and has only so much energy - I feel that he has given up at some point on CSK and I am pretty sure he'll do well for India in the T20 WC. Given his expected work load as Tests, ODI and T20 Captain of India, I feel it is better for CSK to have a "full-time" captain. Sadly, no more inspirational retired aussie cricketers are available for this unless we poach Gilly or Warne which can happen only in 2011. Hussey/Hayden/Murali are all incapable of inspirational leadership. As I said, laughable as it may sound, it might be worth getting Dinesh Karthik, selling Parthiv Patel, and grooming him as vice captain under Dhoni for the long term. He is already the TN Ranji captain, and it might suit CSK to marry the needs of TN Ranji team and IPL team together.

PR, this is the reality going ahead. If Ranji Trophy and Test Cricket have to survive, a good percentage of test players should be able to play T20 and vice versa. Dravid-e T20-la 130 strike rate vechurukkara podhu, I think it is quite easy for correct batsmen to decently shine in T20. ofcourse, Yusuf Pathan cannot play test cricket but he is a ranji success, you know.

TN, if it puts its act together, can string together a few Ranji trophies in the next few years - believe me, as a long time Indian cricket fan, it is something that I have dreamed all along. I am seduced by the IPL and T20 as well - you can call it straying but my reading is that that is keeping my 'marriage' with Test/Ranji intact

Plum I admit I am going into the future kicking and screaming. I still find 20 overs a side match quite demeaning for international players. I must admit that this second edition was 'better' than the first in that there was a more even contest. But more than the outcome it is the theory that annoys me. Breaking and distributing a four over spell of a fast bowler leaves me at a loss of words. IPL is additionally annoying for reasons Krishashok elaborated better than I could ever put across. But principally my grouse is against the T20 format. I am an old fogey.

It has already messed ODIs. When a team chases 420 odd, that is not the best match ever, it signals a sinking. A few years back Dean Jones recommended some rule changes for the reason that it would help break the 400 barrier. Periya sound barrier ! Who the deuce wants to break it ?? Well the answer is loud and clear. A whole bunch of people want it broken. God knows where things are headed with an IPL extrapolation. Now if we are in the death of an ODI and the asking is rate is 7-8, one no longer views it as challenging. Today's kid would reprimand Miandad if did not hit that last ball six because it is 'expected' of him.

Tests are changing too with Aussie standards of four an over. Phil Hughes second century was a disgusting array of gAdA-suththu. He should be given out for offending the aesthetics. It is happening because each format is affecting the other. I know I say all this as I was born in this age. The first match I watched was an ...er 'exciting' tie.

Am sure ODIs would have dissed just as bad when introduced. Curse of the cusp generation I guess.

I reject without consideration Dravid's statistics. T20 IMHO is a format which is not even eligible for any statistical argument. "26 runs in one over and that changed it all." How many times have you heard something of that sort this tournament. It is one of those things which is charming in small parts when occurring with a peculiar rarity. But downright offensive when it happens with alarming regularity. What does strike rate mean when no-one can have the chance to face 100 balls ? That is how ridiculous every single T20 statistic is.

Anyway....Ranji is the last preserve. It has changed from the Zone based to the Super-Plate. Change of tradition. Yes. But it was meaningful. They are planning to bring in one international player per team. Healthy change. Introduced bonus point system. Very fair. The long overdue change is in the first innings rule which kicked us last season. I am fine with change in a framework.
Last thing I want is TN Ranji team and IPL fellows have similar 'objectives' - a 'symbiotic' relationship etc.

I agree with the annoying factors in IPL. I quite agree with KA's contents in that post; the disagreement was with the appraisal of the form.

T20 as a whole - not quite the ultimate deal. Agree. As of today, I see it as a replacement for ODI's. I think thats not a bad change. And your 400 barrier argument is precisely the reason for that. ODI's have reached a stage where 400 is the only interesting thing that can keep it going - and thats not going to be fun. So, my take is let it die and let T20 take over. It is easier to accept T20 from that point of view.

Phil Hughes - I would argue that Chanderpaul, Collingwood and Strauss are graver offences on aesthetics. It cuts both ways, you see.

England-West Indies series - both of them - this year. Surely, this is not the cricket we want to see going ahead?

Let's say T20 statistics dont mean much - neverthless as a quick fix, they work. I'll tell you an example- back in my bachelor days when I used to play computer simulations of Cricket, it used to be exciting to hit 20 runs per over for 20 overs in the T20 mode. But after a tournament or so of such playing, the yearning to play a cat-and-mouse test match used to present itself and I used to switch to Test mode. Vice-versa. Let T20 fill that filler function. I dont think Test Cricket is threatened - you look at AB DeVilliers.

If only T20 existed, Cricket will die a quick death. If the administrators dont know it already, they will learn. Lot of people say now that ODIs are boring, we have invented T20's. What happens when T20's get boring - F5's? I argue that when that happens, we'll have reverse evolution and test cricket will outshine T20 in popularity again.

As for the symbiotic needs of Ranji team and CSK, yeah, I might have jumped the gun there, given that CSK is a private team, a fact easy to overlook when flush with the aftermath of a romping affair with IPL
(heck!my metaphors are all going in this direction, what the heck is happening!). Probably, I meant that CSK can take advantage of the TN Ranji team dynamics

yes it was a fixed move as in Badri's role was to consolidate. In all the matches where we lost 2 wkts at less than 50 Badri was the no.4 batsman (Except for the 1st match of IPL v Mumbai where Flintoff came in) and he did take the score close to and beyond 100 in atleast 3 occasions IIRC.

Yes a very good chance gone waste. Though our semis was lost due to batting (even discounting the near 60 runs given in powerplay defending 140 odd). To be honest with a repeat of similar bowling lineup and pathetic fielding (i've never seen even Muralidharan fielding so badly ever) i dont see csk winning a tournament even next year (with or without MSD)
