Thalaivar's History

Rajini, the real mantra of Tamil Nadu. There are fan associations across Tamil Nadu dedicated to him. Many more than for any other Tamil star, past or present. Rajinikanth, the carpenter-turned-coolie-turned-conductor-turned Super Star says: “I couldn’t have asked God for more.”

A bit of a recluse, Rajni may be. But everyone who’s had the privelege of a darshan with the thalaivar has come away with a spring in his step and a warm glow in the heart. Warm, friendly and affable, he’s the sort who deserves all the superstardom he’s earned. Such men, indeed, are rare...

It’s been 25 years, believe it or not, since the Periya Thalaivar (big boss) made his debut with an inconsequential role in a Tamil film. From villain and antihero to blockbuster supernova, the gifted actor has made the most of every outing. And he’s deserved every bit of the success. SCREEN analyses why...

It's a wide angle shot. A man is seen opening a gate, dressed in rags and smoking a beedi. A terminally ill disease writ large on his face. Precisely on that frame appears the Sanskrit term shruthi bedham, coupled with an off screen voice, an undoubtedly inauspicious start to any debutante’s first screen appearance, especially in the maiden frame.

The film was Apoorva Raagangal (1975). The film itself was thick in controversy, and nobody took notice of the young newcomer, who was on screen barely for fifteen minutes, muttered a few apologetic words to the wronged woman and ultimately died an unsung, unheroic death.

No one in the audience, even in his wildest imagination, would have thought this nondescript man, who had won the least attention in the film would ever win over millions of hearts in Tamil Nadu. Or ride the state like a colossus. Or even that his sway over the masses would be so intense that he could rewrite the fate of Tamil Nadu politics, exactly two decades after the release of his first film.

K Balachander, the director who has an uncanny knack of creating stars, first met Rajnikant at the film institute, where he was a student. Balachander glanced at the dark young man and crisply asked him to meet him in his office the next day. When Rajnikant walked into his office gingerly, Balachander informed him he was going to act in his next film. Overwhelmed by the sudden offer from a ‘big’ director, Rajnikant just could not believe his ears. It’s a feeling Rajni still recounts whenever in the mood of reminiscence.

Later, Balachander confided in his close friend and associate Ananthu, “Watch out! There is a fire in the young man’s eyes. One day he will take Tamil Nadu by storm.” How true the prediction turned out!

Producers went all out to capitalise on this new “wonder” called Rajnikant, and a string of films projecting him as an anti-hero, with all his stylish mannerisms in full swing, were released in quick succession. Gayathri had him shooting blue films of his wife without her knowledge, Bhairavi, Shankar Salim Simon and the like. Rajni had, by now, become an indisputable star in his own right, a force to reckon with.

Though Rajnikant persistently refers to K Balachander as his “guru”, it was director SP Muthuraman who actually revamped Rajni’s image entirely. Muthuraman first experimented with him in a positive role in Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri, as a villain in the first half and a refined man in the second, accepting a woman with a child ditched by her lover. The success of Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri prompted SPM to make a mushy melodrama with Rajni as a hero sacrificing everything for his siblings, a role ideally tailormade for Sivaji Ganesan! That film was Arulirunthu Arupathu Varai, in which Rajni’s mannerisms were totally missing and he even appeared as an old man in the last few frames. Even while the film was in the making, Rajni had misgivings about whether the audience would accept him in tear jerkers of this kind. But the film got made and its box-office success made Rajni popular among women audiences, too. These two films were a turning point in Rajni’s career — he changed from an actor who merely enthralled the audiences, to one who also made them weep. The acceptance of Rajni sans his mannerisms proved he’d at last become an actor from a star. Around this time came Mullum Malarum, directed by J Mahendran, which established Rajni as a hero with a slight tinge of the negative.

Rajnikant’s entry may have been humble, in an insignificant role but the success he achieved in a very short span was unimaginable. A popular Tamil magazine brought out a special supplement at a time when his still on the make, and, he presto, the magazine’s sales doubled with that issue alone.

Such mass adulation, the thunderous rain of applause when Rajni delivered his lines, all put together, made him a phenomenon. It was at this point that Rajni realised the onus had been thrust on him. The fate of producers hinged on him alone. This sudden exposure to the glare of the media and the popularity and money he never imagined would be his, created a lot of stress in his mind. At that crucial time in his career when his market price had just begun to zoom, he decided to opt out of films completely, sending shock waves to his fans. Balachander, Kamalhaasan and his other well-wishers somehow, coaxed him into staying on.

The second phase of his life started with K Balaji’s Billa, a superhit disproving the canard spread by detractors that Rajnikant was “finished”. He was accepted as a full-fledged hero. Billa was followed by a row of hits like Pokkiri Raja, Thanikkattu Raja, Naan Mahaan Alla and the all-important Moondru Mugham, in which Rajni essayed a triple role. Even two decades after its release, the last continues to be a box-office draw and Rajni’s fans can never tire of the thalaivar’s verbal clash with villain Senthamarai. K Balachander’s first home production, Nettrikkam proved to be yet another milestone in Rajni’s career.

An analysis of Rajni’s career graph shows a remarkable absence of fits and starts. It has been a slow and steady rise to the very top. As Rajni sings in a hit song from Badshah, a man’s life may be divided into eight divisions. Rajni’s own career may be divided into three segments. The first as a villain, the second as a hero with negative traits, and the third and present phase, as the reigning czar of Tamil filmdom. With Rajni’s films fetching crores and his market price skyrocketing, the costs of production of his films became unmanageable. And Rajni has since had to stick to a one film per year formula, sometimes, he could do a film once in two years.

The new trend where his films’ collections exceed normal regional film expectations started off with Badshah, followed by Annamalai, Arunachalam, Ejaman, Muthu and Padayappa. It’s now an accepted fact that only a Rajnikant film can break records set by his own films.

As an actor, Rajnikant’s greatest asset, apart from his style is his sense of humour and comic timing. Like Amitabh Bachchan is popular for his drunken soliloquies, Rajnikant is famous for his comic encounters with snakes, repeated umpteen times.

In the early 80s, Rajnikant made a foray into Bollywood with Andhaa Kanoon, a superhit. But Rajnikant could not concentrate on Hindi films because he was already safely ensconced down South. He still made a few films in Hindi, to mention specially Chaalbaaz which had Sridevi in a dual role. Rajni also enjoys a special kind of popularity in Telugu films and his Peddarayudu (remake of Tamil hit Nattammai) seems to have broken all previous records. The Telugu version of Padayappa has been a money-spinner, too. Rajnikant became a trendsetter recently with his Muthu and its songs becoming a rage in Japan and now, Padayappa running to packed houses in the UK and USA.

Basically a religious person, Rajnikant has always owned up his faith. “I was brought up by the Ramakrishna Mission and it’s from there that I have inherited this religious frame of mind,” he keeps saying. Even his films have him openly sharing his faith. In Arunachalam he mouths that famous line, “God decides and Arunachalam executes it.” His public meetings are always spiced with humour and embellished with anecdotes from mythology.

Married to Lata, an English literature graduate, hailing from an elite Iyengar family in 1980, Rajni has two daughters who are carefully kept away from the limelight. Lata herself a versatile singer, now runs a school called The Ashram. The couple indulges in a lot of charity, the latest being converting his Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam into a charitable trust to help the poor and needy.

Ego and starry airs are unknown to Rajnikant. During breaks he hardly ever rushes to his air-conditioned makeup room. Instead, he prefers to sleep on the sets, even without a pillow, merely covering his eyes with a wet cloth. He never comes to functions with a retinue behind him and even prefers to drive his own car.

Rajnikant’s phenomenal success and his sway over the masses make people speculate whether he will follow the footsteps of the late MGR and enter politics. Though there has been a lot of pressure on him to enter politics by the likes of actor turned journalist, Cho Ramaswamy (“Rajnikant is the best choice for chief ministership because he has a basic integrity and simplicity, a quality which is very rare these days”) Rajnikant has persistently maintained a diplomatic silence, except for the fact that he openly supported the ruling DMK in the last assembly elections and discreetly in the recent Lok Sabha elections. When pressed, Rajnikant answers in his own inimitable style, “Yesterday I was a conductor, today I’m a star, tomorrow what I’ll be only He knows!”

Siva is kavithaalaya movie directed by ameerjohn! May be a Balachander asst. Sort of unbelievable story and very poorly directed for whatever reason.

It is about a revenge story.

The best part of that movie is songs and the romantic scenes between rajni and shobana! That was hilarious!

Here is a dialog I remember,

Rajni to speak German, Turkish!

Sanjay Wadhwa the overseas distributor of Rajnikanth’s Chandramukhi has done the impossible. He has successfully sold to the Cologne based ‘Rapid Eye’, the German and Turkish dubbing rights of Chandramukhi which will be screened in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Turkey!

Chandramukhi is the first ever Tamil film to be dubbed into German and Turkish. Earlier Karan Johar’s Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham was dubbed into German and Turkish and it was a huge success.

Remember that it will be 100 percent white German audience who do not understand English or Hindi who will be watching and enjoying our superstar Rajnikanth as a psychiatrist!

They are surely going to say- “Achtung….” (The war cry of Nazis which means, Look out! Take care!) Rajni is here!

It was reported that director P Vasu, after Chandramukhi and Paramasivan, would venture to direct a Telugu flick starring actor Balakrishna.

Unfortunately the project was shelved and Vasu was keen on commencing his next Tamil venture.

However the director is set to direct a Telugu movie starring Manoj, son of popular yesteryear star Mohan Babu.

Sources say it was Rajinikanth, after his Chandramukhi, had impressed upon his friend Mohanbabu to do a movie with P Vasu.

Vasu had earlier penned the story and screenplay for Mohan Babu's blockbuster Political Rowdy.

Not sure if you've seen that movie .. But the scene where Rekha advises Raveena Tandaon as to how Indian gurls should behave before their husbands were BASHED by all reviewers .. In MTV, V Channel, Sony, Zee etc .. They all said when India is getting modernized sooo much, how can they advise gurls to fall at their husbands' feet ??? Actually, it did make sense though !!

But I guess NAATAAMAI was a Superhit in Tamil right !!

Superstar to shine bright on German skies

Rajniknath had the Japanese go gaga with ‘Muthu.’ And now, the Superstar will soon be having the German's say ‘Ra Ra’. In a landmark business deal, AP International, a leading overseas distributor has sold the production copyrights of Chandramukhi to Rapid Eye, a Colgne-based company. As a result, Chandramukhi (dubbed in German), will hit the billboards in Germany.
Indian films have always had a global audience. Bollywood had never taken its eyes off the lucrative overseas market.

Raj Kapoor won over the Russians decades ago. The US and the Mediterranean belt, to a certain extent, has always lapped up Sharukh Khan films with great relish. However, it is for the first time that a Tamil movie is all set to make its entry into the tight-lipped European market.

Chandramuki's release in Germany spells good news for Kollywood and is sure make way for other Tamil films being released in future. Did we Rajnikanth say "Lucka Lucka Lucka?"

Election time. Rajini has not even cared to meet his loyal fans.
Being busy in `Sivaji', he has given appointment to meet some
people.

`Sivaji' shooting spot looks like a fortress built with steel. An
incident happened here when a policeman standing on duty was
assaulted. This was how an ardent Rajini fan expressed his anger in not being admitted to watch the proceedings. After this unpleasant incident, security has further been tightened. Rajini has requested Shankar to keep the shooting during the night.

There is a school called `Karna' near the `Sivaji' shooting spot in
I.C.F. This is a school for mentally disabled children. The tender
children in the school wanted to meet Rajini once they came to know that he is shooting nearby. Rajini who does not grant appointment to political bigwigs, came forward to fulfill the desire of these children. The children along with the Headmistress Prema and Talalar came to the shooting spot and met Rajini. After spending some quality time with the children, Rajini gave his autograph to them.

One of the shooting crew members remarked that the meeting was like a summer rain in the hearts of the mentally disabled children.

Yes, it was great disappointment to me too. The story line(pre-independence) was not that much impressive. But very good songs.

There can be only one Superstar and he has proved himself again and again that in terms of mass appeal, he has no peer. When his detractors wrote him off after Baba, he rose like the proverbial Phoenix and challenged that Chandramukhi would erase all the bad memories. He kept his word and Chandramukhi became the thumping success which galvanized Tamil cinema back to good health. In this era of DVDs, when family outings to movie theatres have almost vanished, the film has been grossing record collections well past the silver jubilee. To express their happiness over the outcome, the LIC unit of Rajini fans’ club organized a function at Shanthi Theatre.

The event had been entirely got up by the fans themselves after consulting Sathyanarayana, Secretary of the All India Association and Rajini’s man Friday who conveyed the green signal. They also sought permission from Ramkumar of Sivaji Productions. He agreed but could not attend the function as he is abroad. In his place, the managing partner of Sivaji Productions, Giri. Shanmugam attended.

Mr. Sridhar of LIC Unit Rajini Fans Club and Gurusrinivasan of Vaaniyambadi had taken the initiative and and the event was the result of their untiring efforts. The whole show was simple but striking. It was a spontaneous outpouring of affection for the star. Usually, the heroes prop up the events organized by their fan clubs in order to get mileage, but Rajini always insists that his fan clubs should contribute to social causes and does not like too much attention on himself. Yet, with a modest budget, this event celebrating the 365-day non-stop run of Chandramukhi had several aspects of a typical Rajini fan celebration.

The main guest was the young hero, Chithiram Pesuthadi Narain. He was quite awed by the fan frenzy for the Superstar. He was presented with a shield with the Superstar in a stylish pose with the caption – One year. Narain said, ”Rajini is an inspiration to many of the younger generation like me. We have to learn a lot from him. My fervent wish is to meet him and seek his blessings. I am very thankful to the fans for inviting me to this joyous occasion”. Giri. Shanmugam was obviously pleased and said,” Chandramukhi has created a new benchmark for Tamil films which can be bettered only by another Rajini film. I am sure, Sivaji, will have a run for not just 365 but 730 days”. There was thunderous applause when he told this. Narain also felicitated Venugopal, the manager of Shanthi theatre.

The function was headed by N.Ramdas of All India Rajini Fans Association and other guests included D.Gurusrinivasan and Bhoominathan. The latter, who is the Secretary of Sivaji Fans Club proposed the vote of thanks.

There were plenty of festivities in the form of kolattam and other folk dances at the venue. A huge 10,000 wala was set off before the function started. Every time Rajini’s name was mentioned by a speaker there were whistles and claps which brought the roof down. Chosen songs from Rajini’s earlier films were played at the theatre and a special screening of the Chandramukhi with “Repeat” songs has been planned for the day as well.

Earlier, five fans from Trichy had completed their journey by cycle from Trichy to Chennai for attending the function while 70 others from Trichy had come by a special bus. They were received by local fans with jubilation.

On the whole the event which lasted for about 100 minutes was a tribute not only to the enduring charisma of the man but also reinforced the belief that come what may, Rajini fans will always have a unique style of showing their respect and anbu for their thalaivar. May God give them many more opportunities to do this

One year of success

Come 14 April, Rajinikanth's Chandramukhi will celebrate its first anniversary.

Released a year ago, the movie featuring Rajinikanth, Jyothika, Nayantra and Prabhu has witnessed a year's run at Shanthi theatre in Chennai, perhaps a new record in Tamil filmdom.

The movie a remake of Malayalam hit Manichithrathazhu was directed by P Vasu and had musical score by Vidyasagar.

Now Rajinikanth is back in the race and is busy shooting for Sivaji while Vasu has his hands full.

It's really a shocking news not only for Kannada Cinema but for the state of Karantaka state. No wonder if Super Star cancel his Shivaji schedule and move immediately to Bangalore. None other leaders would have such a impact of Rajkumar on Kannadigas. In the last 50 years, he is such a legend, ruled the Kannada cinema by giving just 206 films. When he was completing his 100 films, Tamil cinema had seen the second generation of people like Rajni & Kamal.

As concerned in Kannada cinema, Shivaji + M.G.R = Rajkumar. Being a successor, Super Star always proudly to mention Shivaji, M.G.R & Rajkumar as his forerunner. He has been keeping good contact with Rajkumar family even from 70s. He was supposed to do small villain role in Rajkumar's film. Super Star got the first appreciation from Rajkumar for his block buster movie in Kannada cinema, Andam Moola Saval in earlier 80s.

Rajkumar was a big inspiration for Rajni to make his spiritual venture, Sri Raghavendirrar. Rajni - Rajkumar friendship went a remarkable stage only after this movie. Like Rajni, Rajkumar was also creating waves on Kannada politics. To be frank, there is no opponents for Rajkumar in Karnataka. Whoever the ruling party, has to get the blessings of Rajkumar, no other way.

In 90s itself, Rajkumar took the decision not to enter into party politics when N.T.R adviced him to start a new party. However, he started a movement for Kannadigas and it's still question mark why
he didn't like to taste the power!

No one could forget the role of Rajni in Rajkumar kidnap case. Rajni wanted to take some initiatives to rescue Rajkumar at any cost failing it will reflect to the tamilians who settled in Bangalore. Rajni himself came forward to help the emissary sent on behalf of Tamil Nadu & Karnataka State Governement. Once he declared that he was ready enter into forest if required. It was because of Rajkumar, Rajni described Veerappan as monster which created waves among the Vanniyar community and rest of the thing we know very well.

Whenever Rajkumar comes to Chennai, never forget to call up Rajni. When he was undergoing treatment in MIOT, Chennai, Rajni went there to see him which was a surprise visit even the staff of MIOT were also not expected. In the last 10 years, Rajni has become the family member of Rajkumar's family and he never missed to attend their family functions including Rajkumar family film functions.

Last time, when i had been to Bangalore for Super Star Birthday celebrations, i got a chance to participate in 'Joogi" 100th day function. Thanks to Raja & Ilavarasan for the arrangements. I've not expected that much crowd for a film function. "Jooghi" had crossed only 100 days and they were celebrating in a play ground like Chepauk. Rajkumar couldn't stand in the stage. Wherever we see huge crowd, people shouting in kannada, kannadiga flag, Rajkumar stills. No other person would be getting this much honour there.

Yes.. Kannadigas are identifying Rajkumar with the state of Karantaka.. they proudly say Rajkumar is the eldest brother of Kannada Ammegey! No one can replace it May his soul continue to rest on the hearts of Kannadigas!

It was a 30 mins question hour on "why south indian actors are treated as Demi Gods"?

I was asked why south Indian fans are so emotional to thier film stars, quoting the recent riots happened in Bangalore after the death of Rajkumar. some more questions were also asked related to this topic.

At Chennai’s Anna Nagar, there was such a crowd that one wondered if some political personality was there. On getting through the crowd, the personality drawing attention was none other than a kurta clad Rajini.

He had come for the opening function of the Suzuki motorcycle showroom in Anna Nagar. Since Rajini is busy with his ‘Sivaji’ shooting and hardly makes a public appearance, the press was thrilled and wanted somehow to bring out some comments by him to make the headlines.

In the 1996 elections, Rajini had shown support for a political party but this time, he has stayed away saying he was not supporting any particular party. His fan clubs went ahead anyway and aligned with its favorite political party, without heeding his wishes.

Till now, Rajini has not given any response about the matter except to say that this is election time and he would not say anything. When his fan club secretary Sathyanarayan was asked, he said clearly, “Rajini is not for anyone, nor against anyone in this election. Rajini has decided that his fans can vote for anyone they wish. He did not give this statement to the media. He had sent a message to his fan clubs to that effect but the media made it as if Rajini had given a statement to them.”

The message from Rajini is, “No politics for me. Please leave me be!”

You will never catch him endorsing any commercial product. Nor does he make regular public appearances. Probably the only kind of promotions he has done so far are those with a social cause, for instance, the campaign for polio drops. Naturally, when Rajnikanth makes a brief appearance at the inauguration of a bike showroom, it sends the media into a tizzy. On 14th April, Rajnikanth was at the inauguration of a new Suzuki bike showroom in Anna Nagar, Chennai. It was only the previous day that he was at Bangalore to pay homage to Kannada superstar Rajkumar. Rajini is known for his travel plans at short notice. One day he would be in Chennai, the next day in Hyderabad, and the third day, he may take a break to take off to the Himalayas in search of ‘nirvana’.

Back to his public appearance, once word got around that Rajini will be there for the inauguration of the showroom, several of his fans thronged the showroom to have a ‘deko’ of the superstar. The atmosphere was charged when he made an entry. Even through the glass doors of the showroom, one could hear his fans hit high decibel, with frantic shouts of “Thailavaa’ and ‘Mudhalvar’. Obviously, they showed little interest neither in the spanking new showroom nor the new models of the bikes on show. They were least concerned even with the formal ‘ribbon cutting’. All they wished for was Superstar’s glance in their direction.

Rajinikanth was dressed in his characteristic white kurta pyjama, and wore no make up as usual. He seemed to be in no hurry. He strolled around the showroom and was seen chatting with his friends on and off. He politely refused to ‘strike a pose’ sitting on the new bike model. However, he spent a few minutes with the directors and close family members and seemed to be in a lighter mood. He indulged a small girl, an ardent Rajini fan, by readily signing an autograph for her.

He said he was there especially because of Mohan Babu, his good friend from the Telugu film industry, and also because he wanted to keep his word, a commitment he had made to the showroom directors, several months ago, that he will be there.

With elections in the offing, every word Rajni utters is likely to be blown out of proportion. Even if he were to raise his hand to wave to his fans, people would look for any hidden meaning. Rajini disappointed the media by refraining from making any ‘political statements’. He said with elections around, it is better that he remains silent to avoid controversy. The only pun he made was on the name of the launch model of the bike. He said the launch of Suzuki’s ‘Heat’ was timely in keeping with the election fever.

Whatever he does is newsworthy. He was punctual, well almost, avoided ‘politically incorrect’ statements, looked causal, and was quick to leave the venue, leaving behind his frenzied fans and the media. Thalivar vazhi, thani vazhi!!.

Rajni releases AVM 60-Cinema!

Noted producer AVM Saravanan has written his experiences about production of films in his ' 60 years old’ production company, after he took over under the title “AVM 60-CINEMA”.The 496 page book was released at a simple function in AVM studios complex. Director SP. Muthuraman released the book and superstar Rajinikanth received the first copy.

Saravanan has come out with many hitherto untold details and anecdotes with each of the films that AVM produced after he became a part of the production team. It isa well-written and researched book with photographs of Directors, Actors, Actresses, Lyrists, Music directors and technicians who were part of AVM production company.

Each copy of the book carries with it a DVD on the AVM institution as a free gift. This DVD is Edited and Directed by Director SP. Muthuraman.

Baasha - 1995

If you ask any Rajini fan which movie of his thalaivar he likes the most, the answer mostly would be Baasha. It’s the overall choice of the fans. Suresh Krishna portrayed Rajini in two opposite characters - as a calm auto driver and a don who was the terror in Mumbai. Baasha used his unlimited powers for the welfare of the poor and downtrodden and gave up his kingdom when he had to protect and nurture his family. The two figures of Manickam and Baasha were portrayed excellently by Rajini. The film’s strength is the gripping screenplay without a hint of boredom setting in. So, any time you watch it, you are glued to it. Deva’s super hit songs and Raja’s stunts also helped the movie become a super hit.

Rajini participates in book release of ‘AVM – 60 Cinema’

How should a book on documentary be? This is best illustrated by ‘AVM – 60 Cinema’ by AVM Saravanan.

The interesting incidents ever since AVM Saravanan got into film production are beautifully described in the book. Saravanan’s father AV Meiyappa Chettiar is a legend of Tamil cinema and his words of wisdom and experiences are what everyone should know. The author has enumerated administrative ability, punctuality and respect for capability as the various hallmarks of excellence of the AVM house.

Rajini welcomed the gathering for the book release at the AVM complex. S P Muthuraman released the book, and Rajini accepted the first copy.

It has been announced that those who purchase the book will get a DVD on AVM as well as 2 passes for the film ‘Tirupathi.’

The last few pages of the book features photos and information about everyone, from directors to office boys who have worked with AVM. It is no doubt that such a wonderful compilation is possible only by AVM.

On the whole, ‘AVM – 60 Cinema’ is a book to be treasured!

Rajini, Ilayaraja pay tributes to Rajkumar!!

‘His was a life well lived.’ Very few may be worthy of this eulogy. But, it fits Rajkumar quite nicely. In a condolence meeting organized by the South India Film Chamber of Commerce, several members of the film fraternity paid rich tributes to the doyen of Kannada cinema. Superstar Rajinikanth was the first to take over. He said Rajkumar’s death is an irrepairable loss to the film industry. He also added that Rajkumar won the hearts of the Kanndaigas by refraining from joining politics, in spite of his mass appeal.

Rajkumar was hailed as the ‘MGR of Kannada’. He was known for being a simple man and respected all, irrespective of their social status. Several film personalities from diverse fields, including AVM Saravanan, Muktha Srinivasan, Manorama, Ilayaraja, P.B. Srininivas, offered encomiums to the departed actor. Rajkumar may not be amidst us. But, he has left behind a legacy of films that will stay on forever.

Maharashtra Government confers an Award in memory of Raj Kapoor one of India’s great actors. This lifetime achievement award is being conferred on our superstar Rajinikanth for this year.

Though he grew up in Karnataka, Rajinikanth hails from Kholapur in Maharashtra. Even children know that his name is Shivaji Rao, but his full name is Shivaji Rao Gaekwad.

The Maharashtra Government will confer the Raj Kapoor award for this year on Rajnikanth. The award carries prize money of Rs. 1 lakh, a citation, and a memento. Rajnikanth will receive the award at the glittering State Awards ceremony on April 30th at Thane.

Incidentally, Rajnikath aka Sivaji Rao hails originally from Maharashtra. He migrated to Karnataka and then joined Tamil films. Because of his immense star appeal and charisma on screen, he won the hearts of all.

He developed his own personal style and people went berserk watching his unique mannerisms in every film. He went on to deliver a string of hits. His films became so popular that they were lapped up by producers for record-breaking amounts, soon after the film’s pooja was completed.

The Maharshtra Government award is one more feather to Rajni’s cap. This is not the first time Rajinkanth is receiving an award. He is already a recipient of the Padmabhushan award as well as several state awards, and the Kalaimamani award. State to fete Rajnikant, Ashok Saraf

MUMBAI: Tamil superstar Rajnikant will be felicitated with the Raj Kapoor award and veteran Marathi actor Ashok Saraf with the VShantaram award instituted by the Maharashtra government for their lifetime contribution to cinema.

According to a statement issued by the state cultural department, theRaj Kapoor award comprises a cash prize of Rs one lakh, citation and memento. While the V Shantaram award comprises Rs 1.25 lakh cash prize, memento and citation.

Rajnikant's real name is Shivajirao Gaikwad and hails from Kolhapur. Before hitting big time on celluloid screen, Rajni was a bus
conductor. He has acted in more than 150 films in all south Indian
languages and Hindi.

Both he and V Shantaram award winner Ashok Saraf began their
celluloid journey from theatre, and then equally distributed his time
between Marathi and Hindi films as well as television serials.

Saraf has carved a niche for himself in comedy, serious and roles' of
villains. The awards will be presented on April 30 during the state

Everyone knows that Superstar Rajinikanth didn’t attend the felicitation ceremony of the Telugu Mega star Chiranjeevi. The reason given was that the superstar was busy with shooting for Sivaji. Now insiders tell that there could be another reason for this. Rajini was to preside over the function. And there was another superstar, the Big B on the same stage. Somewhere and sometime during the function, the audience could show their prejudice by cheering one of them.

This could hurt the sentiment of the other. It seems Rajini didn’t want to embarrass himself or the Big B. Good thinking?

Gaayu Kutti, Thanks for sharing some good things abt THARMATHIN THALAIVAN !! That's a movie which is very close to my heart for many reasons, some of which are ...

* Simple movie, but very good movie !!

* Rajini plays two completely diff characters !!

* The love that Rajini has for his younger bro Prabu who goes astray in acharaceter while at college ... Tries his best to correct him, but ends up givin his own life in the process !!

* The beautiful romance between Rajini and Suhasini in the first half ... Very clean, no duets with romantic scenes etc, but still bery subtle and the love and depression that she undergoes after he dies is heart-breaking !!

* Very very innocent characeter of a proff that has a memory problem, the scenes where the dog chases him with him on his underwear as well as when he goes to somebody's else's house and tries to convince that person that he did not enter a wrong house !!! And then the regular masala, comedy, action, style stuff once the Rowdy Rajini comes in the 2nd half !!

* The songs Themathurai and Muthamil Kaviyae Varuga !!! IR ruled at that time !!!

* Above all, Thalaivar's looks and hairstyle, Goshh, he was so handomse in those days !!!!

Come election time, there always is a buzz in the media about Super Star’s activities. Which party will get his support, whom he particularly likes, when he will announce his stand – these all become important subjects for the media to do some intense speculation.

This time is no different too. But, since Rajini has already put a lid on all other questions, there was nothing else to talk about.

The only thing left to speculate upon was, will he vote or not? Or will he at least show up?

The question was uppermost in the minds of Rajini watchers as he was away in Hyderabad for the last several days shooting for Shankar’s ‘Shivaji’. Hoping that Rajini would make his usual early morning appearance, all the leading news channels had arrived much earlier at the election booth at Stella Maris College, but much to their disappointment, there was no sign of him.

But, when the media men and fans were about to give it all up, Rajini walked in around 3.45 pm, clad in a spotless white shirt and dhoti, along with wife Latha, in a sober-colored churidhar. His two daughters, Aishwarya and Soundarya, dressed simply in t-shirts and trousers, also arrived following him. Fans went berserk and cries of ‘thalaivaa!’ and ‘Shivaji!’ soon rent the air.

Rajini did his usual ‘vanakkam’ to his fans and to the assembled crowd and entered the booth to exercise his franchise.

Aishwarya’s name was found missing and looked disappointed that she could not vote. Latha Rajinikanth and Soundarya’s names were in the voters list and they were able to vote.

From the moment he came in, the flashbulbs of photographers started popping up non-stop and the press and TV journalists too got into jostling act with each other to get some newsbytes from the great man.

Rajini was his usual calm self and he could barely make himself heard to the media men amidst all the frenzied noise from his excited fans. He obliged the TV journalists by giving them an innocuous quote, “Like Tamil Nadu, I am also expecting the results eagerly!”.

Rajini’s interaction with his fans was only for a very brief time, but still it left the fans in a happy frame of mind. The way the expectations got raised this time even for Rajini casting his vote prompted a few political analysts to wonder whether Rajini would take the plunge at least in the next elections. But then, one should also remember what ‘Thalaivar’ had said once: “Naan eppo varuven eppadi varuvennu yaarukkum theriathu. Aana, vara vaendiya naerathilae varuven!”

It is reported that superstar Rajinikanth is seriously planning to end his acting career. He had planned to quit films after the release of his earlier movie Baba. But the movie did very badly at the box office. All his fans and friends insisted that he quit after a major hit movie. So the superstar starred in Chandramukhi which went on to become a hit like no other, running for more than a year. Now Rajini is supposedly acting in his last movie Shivaji which is being made slowly. But rumours are that even that decision will depend on how the movie fares at the box office.

Chandramukhi enters 400th day in Shanthi theatre

Chandramukhi started with a bang and it is still going great guns. The film has completed 400 days at Shanti theatre. The management is obviously excited. While any Superstar film has a good repeat audience, this film has surpassed all the previous records. The attendance during the weekends is excellent while collections are moderate during week days. There is much expectation about Sivaji and once the film is released, it would start a new cycle. But, Chandramukhi would always remain right up there on top.

located in the heart of the 59th Cannes Film Festival’s International
Village. This is the first time in the history of India’s engagement with
Cannes that outfits from the south have found a toehold on the Croisette.
AP International, which has over 500 Tamil titles in its library,
including super-duper hits like Chandramukhi, Anniyan and Muthu, has now
branched out into the global theatrical business.

How a banana forced Rajini to change his hotel!!

Superstar Rajinikanth is a stickler to propriety when it comes to conducting his affairs. He believes in giving respect and being humble. The man recently lost his cool apparently over a hotel’s high-handedness in overcharging him –of all things, for a banana. Rajini has a permanent suite at a prominent hotel in Bangalore where he stays and entertains his old time friends whenever he is in town. Although, such visits have been few and far between in recent times, he has held the suite out of sentiment for the hotel.

During a recent visit however, things went awry. Rajini had had his lunch and wanted a banana. The waiter said that the hotel did not have stocks of any and so bought one from outside by paying his own money. When Rajini wanted to repay the waiter, he refused to take the money and said that it would be added to the bill. When he received the bill and saw the amount charged for the banana because he was shocked to see a sum of 25 rupees.

So much for just one banana. He promptly paid the bill and then asked the hotel management for an explanation. When it was not convincing, he immediately vacated the place. The man who does not mind giving one crore for a cause, counts his pennies just for the sake of propriety. The hotel has lost a good customer just because of its insensitive and arrogant handling of the issue.

Chennai, June 8 (PTI): Rajnikanth-starrer 'Chandramukhi' will be the
inaugural film at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards
to be held in Dubai from June 15-17.

With a gross earning of over $ 2.5 million overseas, the superhit
Tamil film has broken all records of Indian cinema, an IIFA release said.

awards, a South Indian film has earned the honour of not only being

Director and Board member of IIFA, Ramesh Sippy, said IIFA, which had

NDTV explores ‘The Rajni Factor’

Walk on any street in Tamil Nadu, and nine out of ten, the walls will be plastered with a poster of Rajnikanth. Either it will be on a shop board, or it will be painted on the wall, or it will be a poster from one of his films.

The Rajnikanth fever in the state is something that we live with, we work with and simply accept. But for anyone who does not experience it first hand, it remains an unsolvable mystery. How can this man, who is dark, can’t dance, who looks more like a villain than a hero, be a Superstar? That is simply the magic and charisma of Rajnikanth, and that is what NDTV tried to understand in a 30-minute programme, Witness, yesterday. Simply titled The Rajni Factor, a short, crisp show, with quotes from various bigwigs in the industry, tried to delve deep into the enigma called Rajni, who is, with his film Sivaji, one of the highest paid actors in India!

Khans far away

Yes, you read right. At 16 crores for his current film, Rajnikanth has even beaten the Khans and the Big B, who are said to earn between 7 and 10 crores. For Chandramukhi itself, the Superstar earned 10 crores, and looks like he is the only one who can break his own record. Ramkumar said during the show, “We make such huge profits with his film, that we don’t see anything wrong in paying him the amount, it is only fair.” A sentiment echoed by AVM Saravanan, who is currently producing Sivaji.

“We don’t mind paying him considering the profits we make. In fact, for Sivaji, I have paid him an advance of Rs 1001, and he was bighearted enough to say that I could pay him the rest after the movie is complete and after I have taken care of my business formalities.”

The phenomenon of the Superstar

As NDTV tried to understand the phenomenon of the Superstar, one of the verdicts that emerged was his peers in cinema don’t even think it possible to compete with him. He is the undisputed Superstar, and competition exists only for second place. Vijay, who is at number two and who strongly emulates Rajnikanth, earns 4 crores, a huge gap between the first place and the second. Vikram is next earning 3 crores, while Ajith earns two crores.

Rajini’s flop = others’ hit

The margin between a Superstar film and any other actor’s film is so huge that even box office numbers are measured differently. While Baba, Rajni’s film made 20 crores at the box office, it was considered a flop by Rajni standards, as anything less than 35 crores is a flop for a Rajni film. While, Vijay’s Gilli, that made the same 20 crores was considered a super hit. In fact, Anniyan, Vikram’s film that made 50 crores, is the only film to have touched the Chandramukhi 50 crore mark.

Just a villain

Considering that Rajnikanth is so media shy, NDTV tried to understand the man behind the Superstar by speaking to his peers and family. Dhanush, his son-in-law said, “He is extremely spiritual and religious. A very disciplined man, and it is that aspect I would like to emulate from him. K Balachnader, the director who introduced both Rajnikanth and Kamal Hassan, said, “There was something about this boy, when I first saw him, that made me realize he has the potential.

His nose, his eyes, his features were very good, even though he was dark. And he told me “I want to be a star, that too as a villain!”

NDTV interspersed the show with sound bytes from their earlier show, Walk the Talk with Vikram, who said, “In the beginning, it was Rajnikanth who was experimenting and doing different roles. He was playing the role of a villain, a psycho, etc, and experimenting with his films, whereas Kamal Hassan was playing the romantic hero in all films. Once Rajnikanth became a Superstar, he started giving a particular kind of films and Kamal Hassan began giving different films.”

As actor Prabhu rightly said, “If you see the film Chandramukhi, Jothika has given a brilliant performance, I was there in the film, P Vasu did the direction, and Rajnikanth’s role was such that he wasn’t even there in all the scenes in the film. And yet, it is undoubtedly a Rajni film and you need an actor of his caliber to be able to pull that off.”

Kushboo: He is a wonderful father and his daughters are completely dependent on him and respect his approval for all their decisions.

As his co-star, I remember while shooting for Annamalai, he told me that the song we were going to shoot had my name in the song. I thought he was joking, because it is okay for me to sing Rajni, Rajni, but not for him to sing Kushboo, Kushboo. I thought audiences would never accept it, but well, the song turned out to be a super hit.

Prabhu: While shooting for the song Konja Neram, in Turkey, it was freezing there. The superstar came wearing baggy pants and a thin shirt, much like a hero and I told him that it is very cold and he might need a sweater. He just shrugged and said no. Later, again I reminded him and he shrugged again. Two hours later, he turned to me and said, “Man! It’s freezing! Pass me the sweater!” That’s Rajnikanth for you, honest and humble, with a great sense of humour.

Sreedhar Pillai of The Hindu: The director who direct Rajini’s film should always deliver what his fans like, rather than experimenting with him. For Sivaji, we hope that the Shankar and Rajni combo clicks.

SP Muthuraman (the man who has directed the maximum Rajni films): I really appreciate his wife Lata’s commitment towards the family. Most creative artistes are temperamental, and it was Lata who lent that much needed support, and created a normal family life for Rajnikant and his daughters

Chennai: If you thought the Big B was big, here's someone bigger. His last film grossed over Rs 70 crore, but do you know that Rajnikanth gives competition to international stars when it comes to his pay-check?

Tamil Nadu's superstar, Rajnikanth, earns anywhere between Rs 10-15 crore per film - that's more than what Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan make put together.

That also makes Rajnikanth the second highest paid actor in South Asia, next only to Jackie Chan.

Rajnikanth's last release Chandramukhi reportedly grossed over Rs 70 crore in 2006 - this with a mere regional audience and without an NRI following like Bollywood movies have.

The Mumbai film industry's biggest 2005 grosser, No Entry, made approximately Rs 60 crore at the box office.

Rajnikanth's latest film Sivaji and is expected to bring in more than what Chandramukhi earned. At Rs 50 crore, it is one of the most expensive films made in Indian cinema.

The only thing that has been revealed about the new movie is the superstar's new avtar - a trendy new hairstyle in and as Sivaji striking a pose on a motorbike.

Directed by Shankar, who's known for his big budget hits like Mudhalvan,Sivaji is slated to hit the theaters by the end of 2006.

While the plot and details of the movies itself is a closely guarded secret, the expectation from Rajnikanth fans is an open fact.

"We are expecting a youthful Rajni, this we can say because of some stills of Sivaji that have been officially released. We hope he takes good care of his make up and hairstyle," says member, rajnifans.com, T V Sundaram.

The supertar's legendary hits in the 1990's were all rags to riches story like Badshah and Padayappa but after his home production Baba bombed in 2002, Rajnikanth in his inimitable style recovered with Chandramukhi.

He went in for a complete image change and played a psychiatrist who cures a a schizophrenic. The movie worked like a charm at the box office.

Critics are predeicting a re-invented Rajnikanth in Sivaji as well.

"An actor has to do something different in most of his movies. All actors have to. Rajnikanth is also doing it but still his essential approach to films will remain the same. If that is missing then his fans maybe dissatisfied. If there is Rajni in the film then there must be a lot of action and there must be mischief in his character," says editor Tughlak, Cho Ramaswamy.

A R Rahman has given the music for Sivaji. This is the first time Rajnikanth is working with comedian Vivek, unlike his tried and tested combination with comedian Vaidivel. This is also the first time that the superstar is working with director Shankar.

With so many differences between Rajnikanth's earlier hits and Sivaji producers are hoping that they still manage to strike gold and that will not be different is the box office response.

Rajnikaanth is the highest paid actor in Asia after Jackie Chan. While Chan might earn 68-70 Crores (in rupees), Rajni officiaally earned 14 crores for Chandramuki officially. He also gets a percentage of collection.

'Chandramukhi' released in April 20005 crossed 70 crores while most average Bollywood hits around that time--'Bunty aur Babli' and 'Parineetha' managed only around 45 Crores.
The last movie that flopped of Rajni was 'Baba.' But 'Baba' itself made around 20 Crores, which is not very lower than what the next super star, Vijay might have made for his hit 'Ghilli.'(which is said to be around 25 crores)
Even if one is to go by what he got for 'Chandrmukhi,' at 56, Rajni earns much more than any Bollywood actor. In fact even more than Aamir, Shahrukh and Hrithik put together. This despite Tamil movies being released only regionally and lacking any middle east audience.
'Shivaji' is being made at a budget of Rs. 50 crores. and is expercted to go beyond the 70 crore profit that Chandramukhi made.

Anything rajni gets from his producer, Don’t call that as a salary. Whatever he gets from his producer is not salary but Share. That’s why its very high. Imagine if bollywood heroes get shares instead of salary, then it will be skyrocketing. But the problem is they are organized, not like us. So there is a limitation for salary. If any movies produced by stars like sharukh become hits, they will very easily cross the previous bollywood hit. Rajni’s last film is not even comparable with last year’s bollywood film.

Last year is the boom where many Hindi films did well, the below article is not correct.

See this link (The Final Verdict) the favourite rajini jalra links it says CM collected close to 20 to 25 crores in Tamilnadu theatrical rights. Skip the collections from other states, Audio, Satellite and Overseas right.

If this collection for chandramukhi is a record in tamilnadu, then how come 20 crores of Baba is a flop??? This itself shows how clearly the baba is bluffing. Not only rajnikanth films, his collections also seem to be Myth only!!!!

In 2004, Vasoolraja came 3rd in collections, with gilli autograph in 1st and 2nd place, if gilli is 20 crores film, then surely vasoolraja must be close to 18 crores. This shows that kamal is also close to rajni.

The final fact is, there is no magic in CM theatrical collections, only wonder is that the profits made at other states, overseas and audio and satellite all collected to close to 50 crores. Thatsall. Where as the other films only had theatrical collections. And they didn’t do wonder in other areas like other states, overseas and audio and satellite rights.

Baba is a flop by anyone’s standard, there is no such thing called rajni standard. Sami broke the collections of padayappa. Tenali collections were very close to padayappa collections. Tenali created a record in overseas collections which prompted K s Ravikumar to give kamal the title Ulaga Naayagan. This record was unbroken till Chandramuki.

Between padayappa ad baadshah too there were some films which broke the collections record. Its not that rajni is the only collection king, its just that other actors too have that. So stop spamming that rajni is next to jacki chan ect

i am damn sure that baba was released in japan.. i saw few stills where japanese fans where wearing rajni baba T shirt.. (black colour T shirt) i gave u the times of india link right.. it also states baasha also released there

i dont have any idea of the result whether HIT or not

Actually i read in some newspapers tht Pushpa kandaswamy, the daughter of KB confirmed that chandramuki not releasing at japan. some other place, i read that after muththu no films released there.

even if released, i think baba would have went without any traces there, if released.

there is a trick to know if a rajni film is a hit or not. Even if the film had made a miniscule profits there, then rajnifans .com will post a news saying that rajni's film broke records in japan. if its not even noticed, then they will just keep quiet!
