1 THING I HATE ABOUT BEING INDIAN

Why do Indian people think the lighter you are the prettier and the better you are... It makes me sick! Have you noticed all of INDIA's beauty pageant contestents are all light skinned. It's obvious Indian people discriminate against skin color!!!

I know sooo many beautiful Indian girls that are smart and got everything to win pageants except for they're not the right skin color. When is India going to realize beauty comes in all colors???? WHEN WILL INDIA HAVE A BROWN BEAUTY REPRESENT HER IN A WORLD PAGEANT????? that'll be the day!!! And all the ACTRESSES and MODELS are all light skinned too. I'M SOOOO SICK OF IT!!! THE INDIAN MEDIA IS THE ONE WHO PUTS THIS ALL OUT... AND MAKES DARK LITTLE GIRLS GROWING UP THINK THEY'RE NOT PRETTY ENOUGH OR GOOD ENOUGH CAUSE THEY'RE NOT LIGHT!!

They even got skin lightening creams(fair creams) which is suppose to make you lighter.. people are ignorant enough to buy this thinking they're going to get lighter not knowing skin color is genetic.

  I think this whold light=beautiful thing comes from the people... starting from the Indo-Aryans on the Dravidians.. and then the British and so on.

  light=beautiful is a result of the current status of coloured vs. whites. Power and wealth are with the whites (Europeans, americans, australians) right now, so obviously they set the trend and the rest of the sheep follow suit or imitate.

  Sujata you are right. If the blacks colonised the whole world and were the richest and most powerful people in the world, we wouldn't have these light skin beauties winning Miss Universe, World, Asia, India,Kerala, Kottayam and Koodalloor(!!!) We wouldn't have the notion of white being beautiful and nice. Fashion trends, life styles, social attitudes etc are set by the rich and powerful. Others just follow. If I have money and wealth, numerous beauties will be orbiting me if I don't, I'm worth trash.

  I think the sooner we Indians get over this whole light skin dark skin issue we can all build a better country. You have to admit though it is the notherners that stir the issue with their stupid unfounded idiotic superior attitudes. I love all Indians dark or light.   Anila , I think beauty does not lie in the colour of one's skin .Beauty lies in the way one present herself i.e. her style of walking, talking, friendship ,smile etc.

  My nephew, who is looking to get married in the near future, tells me that lookswise he would prefer the dark and dusky look, but well, that is not the priority. If he likes the girl's values and attitudes it is O.K if she is not dark and dusky.
  
  I admire him not because he likes the dark skin, because he is confident about accepting and declaring what he likes, although he knows the society still at large values the white skin. I also admire him for not making good looks (which is dark and dusky for him) the priority.

  Oh my god. I was just surfing the web and ran across this discussion board. Im a dark, "afro-american" who only thought that blacks had this self hatred problem. Lighter blacks/mixed/latins are viewed prettier because of their lighter skin and "good" hair. Just about every black uses perms to straigten their hair and some go as far as to get cosmetic surgery to lighten their complexion.(so dangerous!!!) Oh man, i thought this behavior was just the result of slavery, I didn't realize it was universal. This madness has to stop. Indian people are beautiful in all shades (though im partial to darker skin *smile*) Until people of colour realize that we cannot be white(no matter how light/less ethnic we appear), we can love ourselves and stop these unattainable goals. We are not white and will NEVER be viewed as equals. Deal with it and stop butchering yourselves.

  You have not come across Indian matrimonial ads (the indian equivalent of man-seeking-woman kind of personal ads.) Things you see there will make
  your blood boil. The skin color will be mentioned explicitly as though it is just another statistic like height or monthly salary! And they will mention their caste, sub-caste and say openly that they will consider only that particular sub caste!
