Who are the authors of the following opening lines of novels? Which are the titles of these novels?
1) It was a bright cold day in April and the clocks were striking thirteen. (1949)
2) It was a dark and stormy night. (Female author)
3) It was a feature peculiar to the colonial wars of North America, that the toils and dangers of the wilderness were to be encountered before the adverse hosts could meet. (1880?)
4) It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened.
5) It was late in the evening when K. arrived. (1925?)
6) It was shortly after I became engaged to Miss Diana that I began avoiding her.
7) It was silent and dark, and the children were afraid.
8) It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way -- in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noiseist authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. (1859)

Pardon me, but isn't number (2) the opening line of a novel that Snoopy is attempting to write in "Peanuts"? Apart from that, I know number 8 is that of "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles D. Number (1) though is so very familiar...but I just don't seem to be able to place it.

Sorry for the Charles D. bit, but the forum forbids me to post the first four letters of his second name.

Number 2 is not originally from a wrinkle in time. It is actually from Bulwer-Lytton’s 1830 novel Paul Clifford.
