I read a concerning article in The Hindu on a recent interview by Mr.V.S.Naipaul. It can be found at http://www.hinduonnet.com/stories/03130007.htm . I have read his book India : A wounded civilization in my college days and I used to wonder how damaging he could be by his senseless assertions and his half-baked sense of Indian History. This article only reinforces my opinion of him. That he accuses R.K.Narayanan and the other Indian writers of not having any sense of Indian History doesn’t concern me, but with his admiration for ``movements from below '' such as the Shiv Sena which, he says, are more authentic than the ``middle class chaps'' with no ``feel'' for the wretched of the earth he could be very damaging to the reader who goes to such writers to know about India. It is so sad to note that these writers are supposed to lead the way for the enlightened Indians !

I would appreciate if anyone could get me the article by V.S.Naipaul.

  I am presently reading Naipaul's Among the Beleivers....
  
  such a wonderful book which goes into the workings of the muslim minds....
  
  infact in one para he exactly predicts that islam will have its end due to the fanatical groups....
  
  one para which made me got emotional was the mentioning of malaysian muslims.He points out that for them, the Tamils come out as scape goats and mentions that the breaking of Hindu idols became a routine affair and says that they dare not touch the idols of chinese....becos only tamils were disorganised and easy targets to show the malaysian affinity for pure islam!
  
  He also mentions that a group of tamils murdered four muslim youths when they were desecreting a Hindu Temple and after that the idol smashings stopped.
  
  He also exactly portrays the paki-fanatics and their stupid theories( toilet shouldnot face Mecca..this was by an Iranian architect!) which governs the entire life of a faithful!

  This is not what V.S. Naipaul says in "Among The Believers"; he writes that it is because the Tamil Hindus were a small, pacific community that Hindu images were destroyed. ( The Chinese were powerful and they had their secret societies - their shrines were not desecrated.)

  Once again please be careful in your statements;
  what Naipaul does say is that five idol-smashing men were met by eight temple guards and four idol-smashers were killed. The temple guards were charged with 'culpable homicide not amounting to murder'.
  And yes, idol-smashing stopped after this incident.

  Naipaul just had a falling out with his friend, Paul Theroux some years back. Theroux wrote a book about it.
