A story - It's man's way of propogating or preserving ideas to others or for posterity, through the medium of partly or wholly fictious representation of ideas or thoughts drawn from real life, it's experiences, and beyond. Story telling is thus are a very human characterstic, and it is fundamental in it's connection to certain cultures... Closely related to the concept of the story, are myths. Myths are also stories, though a greater halo of sanctity or mystery surrounds them...
Stories, storytelling, etc are central to shaping particular cultural attitudes and moorings, be it the the stories of the Bible in the Semitic tradition, or the Ramayana, Mahabharatha tales in the Indian culture, the tales of the black people as recaptured by the skill of many a black writer today (morisson for eg.) and so on....
One may note the weakness men have for stories. Jesus uses this particular liking to good effect by his usage of lots of parables. Great logicians all throughout history used an appropriate story with great effectiveness
The love for a good story amongst little children is well known. So also with adults... Fiction/stories give us the literary space to our imagination that help us to widen the petty confines of our mundane ordinary lives and experience life beyond our four walls, through the eyes of the writer of a good piece of fiction.
Stories and storytelling are thus prime characteristics of the human society, important traits that mould their society's identity.
